About the role

The San José Police Department is seeking individuals who are passionate about public safety and committed to serving the diverse community of San José. This entry-level position is open to those without prior police/peace officer experience or training in California.

Responsibilities

  • Submits Police Recruit application and completes required steps.
  • Completes written and physical agility exams.
  • Passes oral board interview.
  • Completes background investigation and personal history statement.
  • Attends and graduates from the San José Police Academy.
  • Enters Field Training Program (FTO).

Requirements

  • At least 20-1/2 years old at the time of application.
  • Maximum age of 70 years old (mandatory retirement age).
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • U.S. high school diploma or GED (waived if college degree earned).
  • 40 semester college credits or 60 quarter college credits from an accredited U.S. college or university.
  • College units earned outside the U.S. must be translated and evaluated.
  • No felony, domestic violence, or misdemeanor assault convictions.
  • No current probation or parole status.

Qualifications

  • No prior experience or training required.
  • At least 20/40 corrected vision.

Skills

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

Benefits

As a City of San José employee, Police Recruits will be paid the current contract hourly rate while attending the Academy. Upon graduation, they will enter the Field Training Program (FTO) for additional training as a SJPD officer on the street.

Pay

The current Police Recruit hourly rate can be found on the City of San José Pay Plan.

Schedule

Police Recruits attend the 26-week San José Police Academy while employed by the City of San José. They are paid the current contract hourly rate during this period.
