Responsibilities
- Grasp concepts and perform a wide range of tasks promoting public safety and security.
- Perform general enforcement of laws including patrolling, apprehending suspects, controlling traffic, writing reports, providing public information, maintaining records, and providing court testimony.
- Attend training classes as required and meet mandatory training requirements.
- Exercise and comprehend rules, regulations, and policies of the MPD Training Academy and applicable federal, state, and local laws.
- Execute basic criminal investigation principles, practices, and techniques for patrol-related activities.
- Use basic interview skills to obtain information from suspects, victims, and witnesses.
- Operate a patrol vehicle and use appropriate weapons/equipment safely.
- Apply defensive tactic techniques to control and apprehend suspects.
- Use minimal levels of force to control subjects in patrol-related situations.
- Recognize controlled substances and request assistance in handling materials and paraphernalia.
- Provide first-aid assistance during emergency situations.
- Demonstrate critical thinking to solve problems in patrol-related situations.
- Maintain tact and courtesy when interacting with various individuals and confidentiality when working with law-enforcement sensitive information.
Qualifications
- Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent and 24 semester hours from an accredited college or university.
- Must have 2 years of full-time, part-time, or contract work experience within 5 years from class start date.
- Must have 2 years of active or reserve military experience within 5 years from class start date.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent legal resident with an honorable discharge from the U.S. armed forces.
- Must be at least 21 years old upon completion of the Police Basic Training Program.
- Must not have been convicted of or pled guilty to any felony charges.
- Must not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable conditions from the U.S. armed forces.
- Must successfully pass entry-level requirements and testing (physical, written, background investigation, psychological, and medical).
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license as a condition for continued employment.
