About the role
The Martinez Police Department is currently recruiting candidates interested in becoming a Police Officer. Applicants placed on the list can be hired as trainees while still in the academy or as a police officer upon graduation at the discretion of the City.
Responsibilities
Attends a basic P.O.S.T. certified Academy designed to provide an entire overview of the criminal justice system including knowledge of laws and training in police procedures, law enforcement techniques, first aid, and awareness of the functions and responsibilities of Police Officers and how they relate to field operations. Academy and field training would include:
- Instruction by a Range Master on proper handling of firearms;
- Review of radio codes and applicable Penal Code sections;
- An overview of the court system;
- Answering telephone calls and dispensing public information;
- Observation of communications operators;
- Assistance with security duties;
- Assistance in booking, searching, and processing paperwork on prisoners or arrestees;
- Assistance in patrol work to observe law enforcement activities such as maintenance of order, prevention of crime, protection of citizens and property and learning the city's jurisdictional boundaries;
- Review of report procedures and techniques for directing traffic and filing court packages dealing with criminal prosecution;
- Learning computer classification and coding systems;
- Review of the rules and regulations manual.
Qualifications/Education/Experience
- Must be 21 years of age;
- Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate;
- Must have a valid and appropriate California driver's license and a good driving record;
- Must pass a medical examination and a psychological and background investigation;
- Must have a 20/100 vision or better, correctable to 20/30 in each eye, ability to pass polygraph examination.
Supplemental Information
- Selection Process: All applicants are required to submit a PELLETB score of 45 or higher, OR a NTN with the following minimum scores: 65% Video; 70% Written; 70% Reading within the last 12 months to be placed on the eligible list.
- Hiring Process: Physical Agility Test Pre-Background Department Interview Background and Polygraph Chief's Interview Psych & Medical Probationary Periods Police Trainee appointments shall be tentative and subject to completion of the P.O.S.T. Academy. Upon completion of the Academy, the employee will be sworn in and considered an entry level Police Officer with an eighteen (18) month probationary period.
Benefits
- Retirement: California Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) and Social Security.
- Classic Members – Retirement formula of 2% at age 60 with a 3 year final compensation period. Classic Members contribute 7% toward retirement.
- New Members – Under the new pension reform law, Public Employees' Pension Reform Act (PEPRA), effective 1/1/13 those defined as New Members of PERS are eligible for the 2% at age 62 retirement formula with a 3 year final compensation period. New Members are required to contribute towards pension; currently the contribution rate is 7.75%.
- Retiree Health Benefit Reimbursement: Based on years of service, up to 100% after 25 years of service.
- Deferred Comp: The City contributes $65.00 per month into a deferred compensation (ICMA) 457 plan.
- Vacation: Accrued at 8 hours per month for the first 4 years and up to 16.67 for 20 years and over.
- Holidays: Fourteen days per year. (For Dispatchers, please see Holiday section below.)
- Floating Holiday: One 28 hour floating holiday per year.
- Sick Leave: Accrued indefinitely at the rate of 8 hours per month.
- POLICE TRAINEE APPOINTMENTS SHALL BE TENTATIVE AND SUBJECT TO COMPLETION OF THE P.O.S.T. ACADEMY.
- Compensation Time: Compensation time off (CTO) and CTO buy back provided as described in the MOU.
- FLSA: FLSA Overtime as described in the MOU under Alternate Works Schedule for 12-hr shifts when assigned.
Additional Information
- Onsite gym also available for employee only use.
- Training/Education Reimbursement: The City pays up to $1000 per fiscal year. See MOU for details.
- Education Incentive: 3% additional pay for Associate of Arts degree or Intermediate Post Certificate and an additional 6% for a BA/BS degree or Advanced Post Certificate.
- Shifts: Employees may be assigned to work 3 days with 12 hour shifts (3/12), 4 days with 10 hour shifts (4/10) or 5 days with 8 hour shifts (5/8).
- MAY BE REQUIRED TO WORK NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, HOLIDAYS, AND OVERTIME.
