About the role

The City of Apopka is seeking a Police Officer Cadet to join their team. The position offers city-sponsored law enforcement training academy attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Qualified to attend a law enforcement training academy.
  • Currently attending a law enforcement training academy and applying for employment by the City as a police officer after successful completion.
  • Successfully complete all courses in the Basic Recruit Training Program, achieving a score of no less than 80% on all examinations, to include the State Officer Certification Examination.
  • Work well both independently and as a team.
  • Submit all school receipts to the Chief's SR Executive Assistant in a timely manner for reimbursement.
  • Prepare to assume the position of police officer with the City of Apopka upon completion of a law enforcement academy.
  • Maintain employment with the City while attending and successfully completing a law enforcement training academy.
  • Maintain employment as a sworn Apopka Police Officer for a minimum period of two (2) consecutive years subsequent to completing the law enforcement training academy.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of general social problems and cultural diversity of the public.
  • Ability to maintain physical fitness for the successful completion of a law enforcement academy.
  • Exhibit truthfulness and integrity at all times, on and off duty.
  • Able to follow directions and take orders.
  • Ability to operate a computer terminal, telephone, copy and fax machines, and other related office equipment.
  • Ability to pass the State law enforcement officer certification exam.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or recognized equivalent certification.
  • Ability to write and type legibly in English, using proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Successfully pass background check.
  • Ability to successfully complete all law enforcement academy classes and fitness requirements.
  • Valid Florida driver's license.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

EQUIPMENT USED

  • Computer terminal, teletype, telephone, and other related office equipment.
  • Firearms, taser, baton and other law enforcement equipment related to the position of police officer.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Intermittently perform extremely physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, climbing, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of extremely heavy objects (50+ pounds).
  • Potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements including, but not limited to, heat, humidity, inclement weather, loud noise, toxic/chemical agents, electrical currents, pathogens, violent behavior, weapons, explosives, traffic and animals.
  • Tasks include working around moving parts, vehicles, equipment, carts, and materials handling, where extremely heightened awareness to surroundings and environment is essential in the preservation of life and property.
  • Standard body gear and equipment applies in the preservation of life and property, as does special equipment based on assignment including, but not limited to, various types of body armor and safety gear.

Job Location

Attendance is required at the law enforcement academy where enrolled. Occasionally, will also be located at the Apopka Police Department, all City owned buildings/property, parks, grounds and recreation facilities. Any off-site locations and facilities utilized as part of the City's participation or involvement in an event, activity or job assignment. Occasional travel to meetings, conferences, and seminars/training schools will be required as a part of the employee's development and training.
