Police Officer (Traffic Investigator).

Responsibilities

• Serve as the subject matter expert for traffic collision response, investigations, reconstruction, and traffic management operations.
• Execute special event support, motorcade security, and escorts for visiting dignitaries, as well as traffic enforcement.
• Conduct traffic patrols, set up roadblocks, and direct traffic.
• Question, detain, and issue traffic citations.
• Operate a motor vehicle, which may involve high-speed pursuit of suspects.
• Enforce the laws of the United States, the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), and applicable local regulations involving persons and property.
• Exercise search and arrest authority, detain witnesses, apprehend suspects, and interview witnesses and other involved persons.
• Operate the National Crime Information Center (NCIM) terminal to transcribe data and the Breath Alcohol Tester (Intoxilyzer) for suspected impaired drivers.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Must obtain and maintain eligibility for a Secret security clearance for the duration of employment.
• Must successfully graduate from the United States Army Civilian Police Academy or graduate within one year of hire date, unless waived or grandfathered.
• Must successfully graduate from a DOD, Federal, National, or State-approved Traffic Management and Collision Investigation (TMCI) course or complete within one year of hire date.
• Certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid training required.
• Must meet National Incident Management System (NIMS) training requirements.
• Must be proficient in the use of assigned firearms/weapons, pass an initial qualification, and qualify semi-annually thereafter.
• Must complete a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
• Must maintain physical conditioning and pass an annual Physical Agility Test (PAT) as outlined in AR 190-56 within 30 days of employment and annually thereafter.
• Certification in the Individual Reliability Program (IRP) in accordance with AR 190-56 required.
• Subject to pre-employment and random drug testing thereafter.
• Subject to the Lautenberg Amendment, which bans individuals convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence from possession or access to firearms or ammunition.
• Designated as "Mission Essential"; required to report to work during severe weather or emergencies.
• Must possess or obtain a valid state Driver’s License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions and a government motor vehicle operator’s license.
• Requires shift work, including evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations, with shifts rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
• Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
• Subject to possible civil action due to improper exercises of authority or injudicious use of force.
• Federal law requires removal of federal law enforcement officers convicted of felonies.
• Appointment subject to a one-year probationary period unless previously met.
• Must be able to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

To qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:

• Enforcing law enforcement regulations and laws such as the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) involving persons or property.
• Overseeing and investigating a wide range of traffic collisions.
• Utilizing systems/equipment such as Breath Alcohol Tester, National Crime Information Center Terminal, 3D laser scanning technology, and/or Crash Data systems.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). No substitution of education for experience is permitted for this job.
