About the role
A Police Recruit is a non-sworn staff member in a training position. Successful candidates are appointed to a temporary position of Police Officer Recruit while attending P.O.S.T certified basic police academy. Staff members are expected to successfully complete all requirements leading to graduation from the police academy and perform related work as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Receive rigorous academic and physical training in many diverse areas of law enforcement while at the academy.
- Graduate from the police academy and be promoted to the position of probationary Police Officer.
- Participate in a field training program where they will receive on-the-job training in narcotics, arrest procedures, investigations, report writing, and other related assignments.
- Complete a 12-month probationary period, which may be extended at the discretion of the Chief of Police.

- Vacation Leave: 96 hours per year of Vacation Leave increases to 120 hours per year after 5-7 years of employment, and so on.
- Holidays: The City observes 12 holidays throughout the year.
- Sick Leave: Employees will accrue 10 hours of Sick Leave per month; increasing to 12 hours per month commencing on their fifteenth (15th) year.
- Longevity Increases: Additional compensation of 5% above base salary upon commencement of the fifth (5th) year, tenth (10th) year, fifteenth (15th) year, and twentieth (20th) year of service.
- POST Certificate Pay & Education Incentive: 5% above base salary for A.A./A.S. Degree or an Intermediate POST certificate. 10% above base salary for B.A./B.S. Degree or an Advanced POST certificate.
- Specialty Assignment Premiums: Detective Division, Crime Impact Team, Field Training Officer, Traffic Officer, Task Force, Canine Officer
- Insurance: Medical insurance for the staff member only while in the capacity of a Police Officer Recruit, and up to $1,931.04 per month toward medical insurance upon appointment as a Police Officer. The City pays up to $226.30 toward the cost of dental insurance coverage for the staff member and eligible dependents. The City offers a vision insurance plan but does not contribute to the monthly cost.
- Term Life Insurance: The City also provides a life insurance policy in the amount of $150,000.
- City-Paid Deferred Compensation: A monthly contribution of $50.
- Retirement: California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS. The City does not participate in Social Security but does participate in Medicare, which requires a 1.45% contribution by both the staff member and the City.
Pay
- Starting salary for a police officer is $106,068 annually up to a maximum of $122,784 per year at the Police Officer level.
- While attending the academy, Recruits receive a salary that is 75% of the starting police officer salary or $79,551 annually at Recruit level.
