About the role

The City of Charlottesville seeks to hire a Police Officer to join their team. This is a full-time, non-exempt position offering excellent benefits including health insurance, paid vacation and sick leave, paid holidays, employer-paid life insurance, retirement options, gym reimbursement, and training opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in and receives formal training at the Police Academy.
  • Completes courses and training in physical fitness, criminal and traffic laws, search and seizure, first aid/CPR, and various other topics.
  • Assists with traffic control, general investigations, crime prevention, communications, first aid, crime scene investigation procedures, and fingerprinting.
  • Becomes familiar with Virginia Laws and City ordinances.
  • Becomes familiar with Charlottesville Police Department rules and regulations.
  • Becomes familiar with Charlottesville Police Department computer systems.
  • Engages in emergency vehicle operations training and firearm familiarization courses.
  • Attends mandatory and elective trainings.
  • May be required to report to work on scheduled days off or return to work in emergencies.
  • Performs duties with the highest degree of confidentiality and integrity.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • At least 20 years old at time of application and 21 years old by police academy graduation.
  • A valid Virginia driver's license by employment start date.
  • US citizenship or permanent resident alien status with eligibility for citizenship.
  • Passes all phases of the screening process, including written exam, physical agility test, oral interviews, background investigation, polygraph exam, psychological and medical exams, and pre-employment drug screening.
  • Successfully completes the police academy and field training.
  • Obtains and maintains certifications as a Law Enforcement Officer, Virginia Crime Information Network (VCIN) Certification, and Firearms Proficiency.
  • Signs a Condition of Employment Agreement acknowledging the prohibition of tobacco use.
  • No felony convictions or serious misdemeanor convictions of domestic violence, sex offenses, or crimes involving moral turpitude.
  • No DUI or Hit & Run convictions in the past 3 years.
  • No illegal use or misuse of prescription drugs in the last 3 years.
  • No experimental use of controlled substances within the last 5 years.
  • No dealing of controlled substances.
  • No military dishonorable or bad conduct discharge.
  • No criminal investigation or pending criminal charges.
  • No previous revocation or denial of certification as Police Officer or suspension of certified status.
  • No body art, tattoos, or modifications that violate departmental policy.
  • Ability to pass vision, hearing, and smell tests.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or higher in law enforcement, public administration, or related field.
  • Prior law enforcement, military, or corrections experience.
  • Professional working proficiency in a foreign language or American Sign Language.
  • Law enforcement related internships.

Schedule

Flexible shift hours, including holidays, nights, and weekends; sometimes remaining on assignments for prolonged periods. Subject to emergency calls.

Pay

Typical hiring amount is $27.25 an hour ($56,680.00 annually).

  • Working in stressful and sometimes life-threatening conditions.
  • Pursuing and arresting aggressive/hostile suspects.
  • Physically searching suspects.
  • Performing rescues from potentially hazardous environments.
  • Performing CPR and first aid procedures.
  • Controlling crowds.
  • Operating a motor vehicle under normal and emergency conditions.
  • Carrying and demonstrating proficiency with firearms.
  • Qualifying annually with firearm and other less-lethal weapons.
