POLICE OFFICER (PRE-SERVICE)

Under general direction

  • Performs patrol on an assigned shift
  • Cleans and checks properties for burglary and other criminal activities
  • Stops and questions suspicious persons
  • Aids with various emergencies
  • Issues citations for violations of laws
  • Prepares reports of incidents and investigations
  • Interviews victims, witnesses, complainants, and suspects
  • Secures statements and preserves evidence at crime scenes
  • Follows up on investigations when assigned
  • Makes arrests of criminals
  • Attends court proceedings when summoned
  • Books, transports, and cares for detained persons
  • Issues traffic citations and performs traffic control
  • Conducts accident investigations
  • Performs a wide range of law enforcement assignments
  • Investigates crimes in areas such as personal violence, theft, checks, intelligence, juvenile, narcotics, and others
  • Investigates cases involving missing persons, lost children, and runaways
  • Collects material evidence and performs crime scene work
  • Performs surveillance of persons and places
  • Apprehends, interrogates, and arrests suspects
  • Prepares and submits reports
  • Establishes and maintains liaison with other criminal justice agencies

Qualifications

  • Satisfactorily completed a P.O.S.T. approved basic academy or be enrolled
  • Possess a P.O.S.T. Basic academy certificate of completion at the time of appointment
  • Minimum 21 years of age at the time of appointment
  • High School graduate or GED equivalent
  • The ability to read and write English fluently is essential
  • Possess a valid California Class 3 or C driver's license
  • United States citizen or permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship at least one year prior to applying for this position
  • Weight proportional to height
  • Hearing and color vision must be normal
  • Vision must be at least 20/100 uncorrected, corrected to 20/20 in one eye and 20/30 in the weaker eye
  • Ability to speak and write a second language is desirable
  • A general understanding of the Montebello Police Department policy and procedure is desirable
