Location: Chesterfield, VA | Full-time position | Critical Safety Sensitive role subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Description

This position involves patrol operations, responding to citizen calls, conducting investigations, and enforcing traffic and criminal laws. Officers will interact with the community, prepare detailed reports, make arrests, and testify in court.

Duties

  • Operate an assigned patrol vehicle and patrol designated county areas for traffic and criminal violations.
  • Respond to citizen calls, complaints, and requests for information.
  • Conduct interviews with victims, witnesses, and suspects.
  • Prepare detailed police reports and make arrests.
  • Testify in court and interact with community groups and organizations.
  • Perform additional police patrol operations as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Virginia law enforcement certification or certification relinquished within two years preceding hire date.
  • Completion of one consecutive year of sworn service upon finishing a field training program.
  • Left former agency in good standing.
  • High school diploma or GED; must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Pass a physical agility test and possess or be eligible for a Virginia driver’s license with no more than six demerit points in the past twelve months.
  • Binocular vision of 20/25 corrected; weight proportionate to height.
  • No conviction of felonies, habitual misdemeanors, or misdemeanors involving moral turpitude (e.g., petit larceny, misdemeanor sex offenses, or domestic assault).
  • Pass an extensive background investigation, including polygraph, psychological, medical, and drug screening.
  • Pre-certified officers attend a 5-week abbreviated academy and receive full field training.

Requirements

  • Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check, and education/degree verification.
  • Compliance with the U.S. Department of Justice’s “Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy,” requiring a stringent criminal background check.
  • Prohibition of illegal drugs and medical marijuana use for this position.
  • No consumption or influence of alcohol while on duty, on work premises, or operating agency equipment.

Pay

Annual salary commensurate with experience and equivalent to incumbent Chesterfield County police officers with similar years of service. Compensation includes step placement on the department's Public Safety Pay Plan (PSPP) and eligibility for additional pay based on educational attainment, experience, training, assignments, and other accomplishments.

Schedule

Shifts are permanently assigned based on department need. Candidates must be able to work any shift, including overnights and weekends.
