Position Summary

Gannon University, a Catholic university, seeks to fill the entry-level position of a full-time, sworn-in Police Officer. The successful candidate will be responsible for patrolling the campus area by motor vehicle or foot; be a first responder to incidents, accidents, and emergency situations; be responsible for conducting initial and follow-up investigations into significant and criminal incidents and will participate in crime prevention and community-oriented public safety programming.

Required Qualifications

  • Educational Requirement: High school diploma with PA Act 120 Certification or equivalence.
  • Knowledge Requirement: Experienced in interpreting and applying official state guidelines and legal requirements governing arrests, search, seizure, and evidence. In addition, experienced and qualified to demonstrate proper police procedures when interacting with people and safeguarding buildings and property.
  • Ability Requirement: Must be able to take charge of situations in a professional manner and perform calmly and judiciously under pressure; learn courtroom testimony requirements and provide testimony under oath in court; learn modern police/security technology; qualify with University firearm as provided by law, guideline or University regulation; learn and assist with crime prevention/community service/community policing/crime analysis/campus safety programs. Must be willing and able to work whenever needed or required and may work long hours during investigations or events.
  • Licenses and Certifications Requirement: Pennsylvania Act 120 certified or the equivalent from another state with the ability to be PA Act 120 certified. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Interpersonal Skills Requirement: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with students, parents, faculty, staff, visitors to campus, and the general public.
  • Physical Demands Requirement: Ability to: see things clearly near and in the distance; walk and stand for long periods of time and climb stairs; lift 75 lbs.; and operate a motor vehicle. Manual dexterity. Police Officer candidates will be subjected to a drug and alcohol-screening test. Random drug-screening is also performed on all active Gannon University Police Officers throughout their career.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of related experience in law enforcement background is strongly preferred.
  • Experience as a police officer at a university is desirable, but not necessary.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Works indoors and outdoors; may be exposed to dangerous conditions. Must be able to work flexible schedule, including day and /or night shifts, weekends, holidays, varied rotating shifts with regularity. Work will also include extra assignments on short notice or no-notice.
