About the role
The El Mirage Police Department is hiring Lateral Police Officers. We are looking for proactive, community-minded individuals who want to gain experience and make a difference in our family-friendly environment.
Responsibilities
- Responds to service and assistance calls.
- Conducts investigations by locating physical evidence, victims, witnesses and suspects.
- Gathers information and completes interviews.
- Documents facts and elements of a crime.
- Makes arrest when necessary.
- Writes reports.
- Operates a motor vehicle and patrols assigned areas.
- Testifies in court.
- Holds and participates in training sessions, as assigned.
- Serves as a detention/booking officer.
- Serves warrants.
- Provides for traffic control.
- Operates and maintains devices, equipment and weapons associated with law enforcement activities.
- Secures crime scenes.
- Administers first aid.
Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age and a United States citizen.
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- A valid Arizona Class D Driver’s License.
- AZPOST certification.
Qualifications
- Understanding and interpreting laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Applying police methods and procedures, including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, investigation and identification techniques, equipment, police records and reports, and first aid techniques.
- Interviewing victims and witnesses to obtain facts.
- Accurately remembering faces, numbers, incidents and places.
- Thinking and acting quickly in emergencies and to judge situations and people accurately.
- Rendering credible testimony in a court of law.
- Using standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system.
- Operating computerized law enforcement information systems.
- Exercising judgment and making decisions as to appropriate action under pressure in accordance with rules, regulations and policies.
- Working cooperatively, courteously, but firmly with the public.
- Properly caring for firearms and related law enforcement equipment.
- Calculating measurements and performing addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and percentages.
- Correctly identifying elements of a crime and accurately recording them in a police report for purposes of prosecution.
- Operating a motor vehicle safely.
- Maintaining morale standards and integrity.

Benefits
- Field Training Officer (FTO): 5% to the base hourly rate.
- Specialty Assignment Pay: 5% to the base hourly rate for assignments in the gang task force, neighborhood enforcement team, canine unit, traffic motor unit, or special weapons and tactics (SWAT).
- Deferred Compensation: $100.00 employer contribution per pay period.
- Uniform Allowance: $700 at academy graduation or upon start, and up to $1,400 per year.
- Bilingual Pay: $0.75 per hour.
- Shift Pay: $0.50 to $1.00 per hour.
- On-call Pay: $3.00 per hour.
- Call Back: 4 hours at the overtime rate.
- Health and Dental Insurance: City pays 100% of employee-only health and dental premiums for base health and dental plans.
- Tuition Assistance: 100% reimbursement per credit hour up to $5,250 per calendar year.
- Vacation Leave: Up to 80 hours the first year, and 10 additional hours for each year of service thereafter, up to 180 hours per year.
- Sick Leave: Up to 96 hours per year.
- Service Award Leave: Up to 40 hours per year.
- Holiday Pay: 10 hours holiday pay for 10 holidays.
- Sick Leave Conversion at Retirement Eligibility: Employees with a minimum of 1000 hours of accrued and unused sick leave at the time of separation are eligible for pay of an amount of compensation equal to 40%. Employees with a minimum of 1400 hours, eligible for compensation equal to 60%.
Pay
Pay starts up to $51.81 per hour ($107,764.80 annually), depending on qualifications.
