Police Officer III S2

Full-time, night shift (12am-8am) position based at Loyola University Maryland Main Campus. Remote and hybrid positions are open to applicants based in states identified on the university's careers page.

About the role

The Police Officer III position is an experienced law enforcement role within the Department of Public Safety. Campus police officers are responsible for highly visible patrols, responding to calls for service, and identifying problem areas and situations. Officers report to the Shift Supervisor (Sergeant) on their respective shifts.

Responsibilities

• Patrol campus and surrounding areas; respond to calls for service, back-up officers, identify and report hazards and suspicious activities.
• Maintain high visibility and alertness for safety and security hazards, suspicious activities, and intruders.
• Respond to alarms and all calls for campus police services; render services as per departmental procedures.
• Secure buildings, offices, classrooms, and other areas per procedures; investigate reported incidents thoroughly with detailed written reports.
• Provide assistance to the sick and injured following National Safety Council procedures, including CPR, First Aid, and AED use.
• Provide escorts for sick or injured students, faculty, and staff; offer emergency instructions to the Loyola community.
• Make arrests and/or transport arrestees to central booking; appear in court to present evidence or testify as required.
• Articulate accurate information about the University and Department of Public Safety; document incidents and events comprehensively.
• Assist in controlling traffic, enforcing parking regulations, and providing vehicle assistance.
• Contain and control crowds to maintain peace and safety during large events.
• Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned, including mandatory training.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• 3–5 years of relevant work experience.
• Must meet standards and obtain a Maryland Special Police Commission.
• Complete and pass New Officer Orientation Course, First Aid/CPR/AED Certification, and Field Training with an FTO.
• Complete 32 hours of mandatory in-service training annually to maintain police status and pay.
• Ability to write and articulate information accurately; work mandatory overtime as needed.
• Knowledge of the University, its buildings, local area, major roadways, and proximity to local services (police, fire, healthcare, transportation).
• Clear and concise communication via two-way radio; ability to work holidays, weekends, and additional shifts during emergencies.
• Must pass physical exam, drug test, and secure a State of Maryland Special Police Commission (including fingerprint and FBI background check).
• Must successfully complete driver’s clearance process.
• Ability to support the mission and values of a Catholic Jesuit education and University goals for institutional diversity.

Physical/Environmental Demands

• Extensive walking, running, bending, standing, stretching, sitting, climbing stairs, and riding a bicycle (if applicable).
• Working in all weather conditions and temperatures.
• Possible exposure to hazardous materials, bodily fluids, contagious diseases, and loud sounds (e.g., alarms, concerts, large events).
• Must be able to perform law enforcement functions, including effecting physical arrests, climbing stairs, standing for extended periods, stooping, and bending.
• Ability to work in adverse weather conditions while wearing appropriate uniforms.
