About the role

The University of North Texas at Dallas Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety and security of our campus community. This position performs all duties associated with a licensed police officer, including preventive patrol, arrest, search and seizure, traffic enforcement, crash investigation, public safety, and maintaining public order on the university campus and surrounding area. Officers patrol all campus areas, buildings, and parking lots day and night, exercising good judgment and discretion in dealing with violators of laws and university regulations. Officers may be required to work special assignments, events, or be on call.

Responsibilities

• Conduct regular patrols inside and outside of buildings, parking lots, and campus grounds to monitor for criminal activity, unsecured buildings, fires, or other unusual conditions.
• Investigate reports of criminal behavior and university regulation violations.
• Arrest violators and file appropriate charges when necessary.
• Issue citations for parking and traffic violations.
• Conduct traffic accident investigations.
• Prepare written and oral reports on completed investigative activities and calls.
• Testify in criminal/civil court, administrative hearings, and other required venues.
• Enforce traffic laws and direct traffic on area public streets.
• Protect lives and property.
• Perform other duties as directed by the Chief of Police or supervisory personnel.
• Observe safety and security measures appropriate to the work performed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Must be at least 20.5 years of age at the time of application.
• Must be a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident of the United States. If a legal permanent resident, must be an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. armed forces with at least two years of service and evidence of applying for U.S. citizenship.
• Active peace officer license from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). Reserve officer status does not qualify.
• Intermediate Police Officer License or ability to obtain one.
• Valid Texas Driver’s License or ability to obtain one within thirty (30) days of employment.
• Ability to work long or irregular hours, various shifts, and under severe emotional stress or inclement weather.
• Ability to react quickly and effectively in emergency (high-stress) situations.
• Demonstrate professional demeanor and excellent oral communication skills.
• Lateral entry incumbents must be currently employed as a police officer in Texas or another state/federal jurisdiction acceptable to the university, or have less than a twelve (12) month break in service.
• Ability to operate a computer with a general understanding of application software and the Internet.
• Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in business, criminal justice, sociology, computer science, or a related field.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Skills

• Able to furnish acceptable character references.
• Understand and willing to abide by the Police Officers Code of Ethics.
• Physically able to perform police officer duties.
• Exercise good judgment and utilize tact and courtesy when working with the public under stressful conditions.
• Ability to formulate solutions to problems in accordance with statutes, regulations, and training.
• Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.

Physical Requirements

• Communicating with others to exchange information.
• Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and similar structures.
• Lifting and moving objects up to 20 pounds, 50 pounds, and 100 pounds or more.
• Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving between worksites.
• Moving in various positions to perform tasks in tight or confined spaces.
• Operating machinery, power tools, motor vehicles, or heavy equipment.
• Repeating motions involving wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
• Sedentary work involving sitting or standing for extended periods.

Environmental Hazards

• Elevated temperatures.
• Exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
• Exposure to moving mechanical parts or vibration.
• Low temperatures.
• Noisy environments.
• Outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
• Small and/or enclosed spaces.
• Work with toxic or caustic chemicals.

Schedule

Rotating shifts, including weekends.
