About the role
The job of a police officer is a sworn and state certified peace officer position assigned to University Police and Security Services. Police officers operate under the general direction of the Chief of Police /Director of University Police and Security Services.
Responsibilities
- Provides personal safety and crime prevention education to institutional community
- Engages in problem solving, threat mitigation, and conflict resolution for a wide range of issues and incidents involving citizens, groups, campus entities, government agencies, businesses, leaders, and others
- Ensures the safe and orderly flow of traffic on institutional roadways and enforces traffic laws
- Performs preliminary and follow-up investigations to solve crimes, identify suspects and victims, apprehend criminals, and document case information
- Provides protection of life, property, and the preservation of peace and good order and provides emergency aid to the institutional community
Requirements
- Requires certification as a police officer in the State of Wisconsin upon appointment
- Completion of the WI 720 Law Enforcement Academy
- Knowledge of or the ability to learn the functions of a campus law enforcement operation
- Associates degree or higher
- Effective oral and written communication
- Knowledge of federal, state laws and UW System rules
- Knowledge of current investigatory techniques and procedures
Qualifications
- Previous sworn law enforcement experience
- Knowledge or experience with university system law enforcement
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
Skills
Knowledge of or the ability to learn the functions of a campus law enforcement operation.
Effective oral and written communication.
Knowledge of federal, state laws and UW System rules.
Knowledge of current investigatory techniques and procedures.

Pay
The Police Officer is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt, annual position. Well-qualified candidates can expect an hourly rate of $35.
Schedule
Department University Police and Security Services is the Campus law enforcement authority, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The primary goal is the protection of the University, its occupants, and the surrounding community. University Police operate in a full law enforcement capacity and have a close working relationship with the Stevens Point Police Department.
