Job Summary/Scope

Job Responsibilities
- Patrols assigned areas to detect and prevent crime.
- Answers calls for service and assistance.
- Investigates criminal complaints and accidents.
- Enforces motor vehicle laws.
- Affords assistance to the District Attorney.
- Prepares timely and accurate reports.
- Develops informants for intelligence gathering.
- Questions witnesses and complainants.
- Attends community meetings.
- Organizes neighborhood watches.
- Makes presentations to churches, schools, civic organizations, and business leaders.
- Participates in agency volunteer programs.
- Performs organized patrols of high crime areas.
- Writes and executes search warrants.
- Serves warrants and subpoenas.
- Maintains vehicle, firearms, and other equipment.
- Directs traffic as needed.
- Collects and maintains evidence.
- Ensures proper chain of custody.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a high school level or equivalent.
- No experience requirements.
- Valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina.
- Physically capable of meeting current requirements set forth by the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission.
- Passes a drug screen administered according to the standards of the Department of Health and Human Services for Federal Workplace Drug Testing Programs.
- Psychologically screened by a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist licensed to practice in North Carolina.
- Interviewed personally by the Department Head or his representative.
- Not convicted of felonies, crimes punishable by more than two years in prison, or four or more Class B misdemeanors within the past five years.
- Graduated from high school or passed the General Educational Development Test indicating high school equivalency.
- Satisfactorily completes the employing agency's in-service firearms training program.
Work Environment/Physical Demands
The work involves frequent lifting of light and occasionally heavy objects, using tools and equipment requiring high dexterity, and exposure to life-threatening situations. The work may be performed outdoors in cold or inclement weather.
