Police Officer I

Temporary (Fixed Term) position, 30%–60% part-time, 12-month appointment with potential to extend. Two vacancies available.

About the role

This is a sworn law-enforcement position under the general direction of a ranking officer or supervisor. The role ensures safety and security on all institutional properties by enforcing laws, investigating complaints and incidents, maintaining order, identifying criminal activity, and apprehending and arresting offenders.

Responsibilities

• Provides personal safety and crime-prevention education to the institutional community.
• Engages in problem solving, threat mitigation, and conflict resolution for a wide range of issues and incidents involving citizens, groups, campus entities, government agencies, businesses, leaders, and others.
• Provides protection of life, property, and the preservation of peace and good order; delivers emergency aid to the institutional community.
• Performs preliminary and follow-up investigations to solve crimes, identify suspects and victims, apprehend criminals, and document case information.
• Ensures the safe and orderly flow of traffic on institutional roadways and enforces traffic laws.

Public Services to University

• Provides personal safety escorts for students, staff, or faculty to campus areas.
• Provides escort and delivery of money bags.
• Provides non-emergency medical transportation.
• Controls crowds and traffic associated with large group events.
• Alerts administration to weather or safety concerns which may affect campus.
• Assists with critical incidents and incident command situations as directed.

Additional Duties

• Completes required trainings and professional development as assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Eligible to become Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Certified.
• At least two years’ previous law-enforcement experience within the past three years.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Must be independently, legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire and maintain work authorization without support from UW-Superior.

Qualifications

• Working knowledge of investigatory methods and techniques.
• Knowledge of state statutes, UW-System rules/regulations, traffic and parking regulations.
• Knowledgeable on criminal arrest proceedings, rules of evidence, search and seizure laws.
• Knowledge of criminal justice system and prosecutorial procedures.
• Physical ability to patrol via foot, bike, and vehicle.
• Proficiency with self-defense and arrest tactics.
• Meet and maintain state and departmental guidelines for carrying a firearm.
• Ability to react quickly and effectively to stressful situations.
• Knowledge and skill in administration of first aid and CPR.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population.
• Ability to drive a vehicle for university business and meet criteria for operation of state-owned vehicles (Policy 615).

Desirable Qualifications

• Previous completion of a Wisconsin Accredited Law Enforcement Academy.
• Associate degree or higher.
• Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) Training.
• Basic Life Support/First Aid Certified (including CPR Training).
• Pursuit driving training.
• Experience working within the principles of community-oriented policing in a higher-education setting.

Pay

$28.00 hourly.
