About the role
The Police Officer I position at the University of Wisconsin–Parkside provides comprehensive law enforcement and security services to the campus community. This role involves enforcing laws and regulations, responding to threats, investigating complaints and suspicious incidents, maintaining public order, assisting community members, and collaborating to address underlying problems.
Responsibilities
- Enforces laws and regulations, responds to threats, investigates complaints and suspicious incidents, maintains public order, assists community members, and works collaboratively to address underlying problems.
- Carries out essential duties with professionalism, integrity, impartiality, sensitivity, and respect for the rights and dignity of all individuals, under the general supervision of the Chief of Police.
- Provides personal safety and crime prevention education to the institutional community.
- Engages in problem solving, threat mitigation, and conflict resolution for a wide range of issues and incidents involving citizens, groups, campus entities, government agencies, businesses, leaders, and others.
- Protects life, property, and the preservation of peace and good order, and provides emergency aid to the institutional community.
- Performs preliminary and follow-up investigations to solve crimes, identify suspects and victims, apprehend criminals, and document case information.
- Ensures the safe and orderly flow of traffic on institutional roadways and enforces traffic laws.
Requirements
- At least 21 years of age by application/appointment.
- United States citizen.
- Completion of either an Associate Degree or a minimum of 60 fully accredited college-level credits.
- Completion of a Wisconsin Department of Justice approved "Law Enforcement Recruit" training course or already certified by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB) as a Law Enforcement Officer.
- Possession of a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
- No felony or misdemeanor convictions.
Qualifications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage respectfully and professionally with students, staff, visitors, and the public.
- Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, including arrest procedures, search and seizure, evidence handling, and use-of-force standards, as well as relevant health and safety regulations.
- Proficiency in current investigative methods and practices.
- Ability to observe, assess, and accurately recall details related to incidents, individuals, and environments.
- Strong judgment and the ability to quickly evaluate situations and determine appropriate actions.
- Proven capacity to manage multiple tasks effectively in high-pressure or emergency situations.
- Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office, TraCS, and Records Management Systems.
- Skilled in the safe and effective use of law enforcement equipment, including firearms, enforcement tools, and audio/visual devices.

UW–Parkside offers a competitive compensation package, including a starting salary of $30.75 per hour.
Schedule
The Police Officer I position requires a rotating schedule of 6:00 PM – 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM - 1:00 AM, 24/7 coverage.
Pay
The starting pay for this position is $30.75 per hour.
