Police Officer

About the Role

Performs and directs general duty police work involved in the enforcement of laws, crime prevention, and public protection. Patrols streets, public places, and residences on foot or by vehicle to prevent crimes and enforce laws and ordinances. Conducts preliminary investigations, makes arrests, protects crime scenes, and preserves evidence. In the absence of a traffic section, investigates motor vehicle accidents, renders aid, directs traffic, and prepares reports. May be assigned special duties such as neighborhood watch officer, public relations officer, or training officer.

Responsibilities

• Patrol assigned areas to prevent and detect criminal activity.
• Respond to calls for service and emergencies.
• Conduct preliminary investigations, gather evidence, and interview witnesses.
• Make arrests and transport suspects as necessary.
• Investigate motor vehicle accidents, render aid, and direct traffic when required.
• Prepare detailed reports on incidents, arrests, and investigations.
• Engage in community policing efforts, such as neighborhood watch programs.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Must pass a physical fitness test at the minimum required entry-level standards set by the NM Law Enforcement Academy.
• Must pass a medical fitness exam, psychological inventory (MNP1), and drug screening tests.
• Able to perform defensive tactics, firearm training, and other physically demanding trainings.
• Must have a favorable background investigation.
• High School Diploma or equivalent (preferred AA or BA degree in Police Science).
• NM Class D Driver’s License.
• 19 years of age or older.
• U.S. Citizenship; no criminal convictions involving felonies, moral turpitude, and/or domestic violence.

Qualifications

• Preferred: NMDPS Certified or Certifiable, or currently enrolled in a Police Academy.
• Preferred: 1 to 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Pay

• Certified entry level: $48,484 annual basis.
• Non-certified: $45,968 annual basis.
