About the Role

This position is responsible for protecting the lives, safety, health, welfare, and property of individuals within the Town of Avon by enforcing municipal, state, and federal ordinances, statutes, and laws. Officers may be assigned to patrol duties, investigative duties, and other special assignments necessary to protect and serve the public.

Responsibilities

• Provide independent judgment and good decision-making based on rules, regulations, and policies of the Avon Police Department.
• Physically protect oneself, the public, or fellow officers in threatening and stressful situations, including use of deadly force if required.
• Arrest persons wanted on warrants or upon probable cause, overcoming resistance when necessary, and following all legal requirements.
• Investigate traffic accidents and crimes, including evidence collection, scene documentation, victim care, offender apprehension, and witness interviews across varied terrain.
• Patrol assigned areas to prevent crime, deter illegal activities, and serve citizens by identifying violations of criminal and traffic laws.
• Respond to radio-dispatched calls for service, including emergencies, crimes in progress, traffic accidents, domestic disturbances, alarms, and other incidents.
• Prepare detailed reports for criminal violations, non-criminal incidents, traffic accidents, injuries, and other assigned matters.
• Prepare criminal filings for felony violations and present them to the court; testify in court regarding observed situations and actions taken.
• Perform traffic direction during congestion or emergencies.
• Carry and use department-issued firearms (semi-automatic pistol, 12-gauge shotgun, high-powered rifle, less lethal shotgun) and qualify annually.
• Communicate effectively using a handheld police radio.
• Participate in annual department training on officer safety, handcuffing techniques, gun retention, and other required training (written, physical, classroom, and firearms).
• Provide backup assistance to outside agencies when requested, regardless of jurisdiction.
• Drive a patrol vehicle safely during normal and emergency responses.
• Maintain a professional appearance and conduct to promote positive public relations.
• Work all shifts required by the department, including days, evenings, nights, and special assignments.
• Conduct business inspections to strengthen physical security and provide escorts for money deposits.
• Develop intelligence on potential crime, drug violations, and traffic problems.
• Assist schools, community programs, and citizen groups with public relations and safety programs.
• Attend department staff and in-service training meetings; conduct training for officers, the public, and outside agencies.
• Enforce parking regulations and provide vehicle inspections for the public.
• Provide extensive traffic enforcement in identified accident-prone areas.
• Assist the public with roadside assistance, information, directions, business checks, vacation checks, and other requests within legal scope.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
• Completion of a P.O.S.T. certified Police Training Academy and P.O.S.T. certification (or certifiable) in firearms, driver training, and arrest/control techniques.
• Minimum of one year of experience as a Police Officer is preferred.
• Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment.
• Must be a United States Citizen or permanent resident.
• Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license.
• Must pass entry-level exams: psychological exam, polygraph exam, physical exam, written exam, oral board exam, physical ability exam, and extensive background investigation.
• Must be in good physical condition with weight proportionate to height.
• Employment is contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug and alcohol test; may be subject to random, unannounced testing.
