Pay

Hiring range: $26.46 - $33.74 per hour.

  • Police Officer “Certification Pay”:
    • Intermediate: $1,200 annually
    • Advanced: $2,400 annually
    • Master: $4,800 annually
  • Years of Service (total police experience, excluding corrections, armed security, military police):
    • 0-3 years: $6,000
    • 4-9 years: $9,000
    • 10+ years: $12,000
  • Tuition reimbursement for up to 6 hours per semester to attend classes at Texas Southern University. Minimum passing grade of “C” and ability to maintain a GPA of 2.0 is required for reimbursement.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors campus buildings, parking lots, and garages for criminal activity.
  • Maintains readiness for emergency and routine calls for service.
  • Educates the campus community on emergency and safety prevention techniques.
  • Enforces all Federal, Local, and State laws.
  • Conducts daily and periodic patrols of various areas by foot, bicycle, electric-powered golf cart, or patrol vehicle to preserve the peace, enforce laws, prevent and detect crime, respond to complaints, and complete police reports.
  • Provides essential services under the direction of the Crisis Management Team during campus emergencies.
  • Enforces state laws and files proper charges and documents with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
  • Responds to dispatch calls regarding service, accidents, disturbances, crime, distress, or illness; provides information, assistance, and service to students, staff, and the public.
  • Investigates illegal or suspicious activities, persons, and establishments; determines causes and results of accidents; completes required reports.
  • Collects and preserves physical evidence, protects crime scenes, and records all facts of incidents.
  • Works campus events, special events, and university-sponsored events.
  • Controls and directs traffic to enforce University parking regulations and departmental towing policies.
  • Mediates and resolves conflicts involving students, department personnel, and community members.
  • Provides escort service as needed and assists state, county, and city law enforcement authorities as requested.
  • Conducts crime prevention programs and presentations for faculty, staff, students, and the surrounding community.
  • Testifies at administrative hearings and in court to present evidence.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent specialized or technical training.
  • Licensed as a Texas peace officer through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement enrolled BPOC.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Basic Peace Officer’s Certification.
  • Medical and psychological examination.
  • Successful firearms qualifications.
  • Successful completion of the Field Training Program (FTO).
  • Auto insurance.
  • No criminal charges.
  • Able to obtain security clearance.
