About the role
Sworn law‑enforcement position responsible for protecting life and property, preventing and investigating crime, enforcing laws, handling traffic accidents, apprehending violators, maintaining public order, and providing assistance and services to the community. Candidates are expected to start immediately after passing pre‑employment background and testing, with an anticipated start date in early to mid‑December 2026. Certified or certifiable police officers are preferred; lateral transfer candidates are encouraged and will be considered for rate of pay and vacation eligibility based on experience, education, and additional skills.
Pay
Salary range: $66,930.55 – $81,634.18 annually.

Responsibilities
- Patrol an assigned sector of the city on foot or by conveyance.
- Enforce traffic laws; issue citations, warnings, or other actions for violations.
- Direct traffic and investigate traffic accidents and road obstructions.
- Report conditions of streets, signs, curbs, sidewalks, and other public‑way features.
- Take appropriate action on matters affecting public safety and employ problem‑solving strategies.
- Provide assistance to meet community needs.
- Investigate wanted or missing persons and property.
- Investigate crimes and citizen complaints; search for and preserve evidence.
- Search for and apprehend violators; transport persons in custody.
- Conduct interviews and interrogations; prepare reports and cases for prosecutors.
- Present testimony in court; serve warrants and legal documents.
- Conduct security checks and represent the department at public functions as assigned.
- Assist co‑workers during absences and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Age 18 years or older.
- U.S. citizen with no felony or domestic‑violence convictions.
- If a veteran, provide proof of honorable discharge (DD‑214 required).
- Vision 20/40 corrected.
- Valid driver’s license (Wisconsin preferred) without restrictions or with correctable restrictions.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle under normal and adverse conditions while communicating and using vehicle equipment.
- Residency as required by labor agreements.
- Ability to provide credible testimony in court.
- Ability to work cooperatively and harmoniously with others.
- Pass physical and psychological examinations required for sworn positions.
- Free from physical, emotional, or mental conditions that could adversely affect police duties.
- Physically capable of firearms use, defense and arrest tactics, handcuffing, restraining, pursuit, emergency rescue, first aid, operating police vehicles, and effective oral/written communication.
- Lawful possession of firearms.
- Ability to meet all competencies required by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Training and Standards Bureau for police certification.
- Applicants must be certified or certifiable as a police officer (completion of the Criminal Justice Law Enforcement Academy – 720 hours).
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Obtain 60 college credits within five years of employment (from an accredited university, college, or technical school).
