Responsibilities

The Campus Police Officer shall be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of university properties, faculty, staff, students, guests, and visitors during their assigned tour of duty. They shall be individually accountable for the post or assignment during their official tour of duty, which includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Preventing and suppressing crime
  • Protecting life and property
  • Apprehending and protecting of offenders
  • Maintaining peace and order
  • Enforcing federal, state & local requirements and university rules, policies, and procedures
  • Assisting with the development and improvement of mechanisms to create and enhance relationships with the police department and the university community

Qualifications

  • 21 years of age or older
  • United States citizen
  • Legal resident of the State of New Jersey
  • Able to read, write, and speak English fluently and intelligently
  • In sound physical and mental health sufficient to perform police officer duties
  • Of good moral character, with no criminal convictions involving moral turpitude
  • Capable of operating a law enforcement vehicle in various conditions
  • Computer literate and able to operate software programs associated with campus police duties
  • Hold a high school diploma or GED required; higher education in a related field preferred
  • Attend and successfully complete a bona fide New Jersey Basic Police Academy and be a fully certified police officer or a graduate of an Alternate Route Program as required by the New Jersey Police Training Commission and /or possess a current PTC Certification
  • Candidate must meet the physical fitness standards required for police academy admission if not currently licensed or certified
  • Meet and maintain all requirements necessary for New Jersey police licensing (https://nj.gov/njsp/recruiting/selection-process.shtml)
  • Meet and maintain all requirements related to PTC Licensing
  • Possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license with a good driving record and be capable of operating a law enforcement vehicle during both day and night, in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic and in unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, smoke, rain, ice and snow
  • Successfully pass an interview process, rigorous background investigation, psychological examination, and law enforcement drug screening test, and receive a commissioning by the Stevens Institute of Technology Board of Trustees
  • Successfully qualify with both a handgun and long gun as prescribed by the NJ Police Training Commission

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree or other higher education in a related field preferred
  • Current New Jersey Police Officer Certification/License; approval of New Jersey Training Commission for police commission

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, climb, reach, talk, listen, write and read
  • The employee is occasionally required to run, restrain individuals, and be exposed to physical conflict
  • Work environment involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures and loud noises
  • Work environment involves moderate exposure to hazards and physical risks to personal safety
  • Must be physically fit and able to defend oneself from attack or physical assault
  • Must have 20-20 or 20-30 vision either naturally or with corrective lenses
  • Must be able to wear the required uniform including, but not limited to a protective vest

Compensation

The annual base salary range for this position is $52,500.00 - $60,500.00. This range represents the University’s good faith estimate of possible compensation at the time of posting. Stevens Institute of Technology determines compensation based on factors including the position’s scope and responsibilities, the candidate’s experience, education, skills, internal equity, market data, and organizational considerations. The final salary will be set considering departmental budget, qualifications, and relevant credentials.
