About the role

Simmons University Police Officers work in a team-based environment to support the Simmons University Public Safety Department and community by providing public safety and law enforcement services with dignity and respect. Officers protect lives and property, enforce regulations and laws, and contribute to a safe and secure campus environment.

Responsibilities

• Protect life and property, responding safely and rapidly to emergency calls for police service (e.g., crimes in progress, medical emergencies, fires, alarms, accidents).
• Conduct thorough initial and follow-up investigations of incidents as assigned.
• Assist Massachusetts State Police, Boston Police, Transit Police, COF Police, Boston Fire, Boston EMS, and other public safety providers as required.
• Enforce Massachusetts General Laws and Simmons University regulations; arrest criminal offenders and participate in court proceedings.
• Refer student offenders for internal disciplinary action and participate in the university’s disciplinary process.
• Prevent criminal activity through highly visible patrols, crime prevention briefings, and community engagement.
• Operate department communication equipment, including dispatch systems, alarms, and CCTV.
• Perform safety and security inspections of campus facilities, grounds, and equipment on foot, bicycle, or motor vehicle.
• Assist with parking enforcement and monitoring of parking resources.
• Train newly hired Police Officers and Public Safety Officers.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or designee to support department and university needs.

Requirements

• Successful completion of a Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) certified basic police Recruit Officer Course or the Mass. State Police SSPO Academy for POST certification.
• Eligibility for appointment as a Special State Police Officer (M.G.L. ch.22 s. 63).
• Out-of-state academy graduates must have 2 years of full-time law enforcement experience for MPTC exemption.
• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• At least 21 years old.
• Ability to obtain a Massachusetts Driver’s License and Massachusetts Class A License to Carry.
• Pass a comprehensive background check, psychological exam, drug test, and pre-employment medical exam.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in law enforcement, preferably in a college or university environment.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Active certification in CPR/First Aid/AED.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Knowledge of ARMS system.
• Military veterans encouraged to apply.

Schedule

The Simmons University Public Safety Department operates 24/7. Officers are assigned to rotating shifts following a four days on, two days off schedule. Mandatory overtime may be required under certain circumstances, and holiday/weekend work is expected. Officers are considered essential personnel and may be called in during emergencies.

Pay

Starting salary: $59,696. Effective October 29, 2025, the hourly range for this position is $18.80 - $30.48. Actual compensation will be based on experience, education, skills, equity, and external market benchmarks.
