Police Officer

Pay range: $33.64 to $53.45 per hour, based on qualifications and experience. Starting wage: $33.64.

About the role

The Police Officer works under the direction of the Sergeant and is responsible for the protection of life and property and the enforcement of laws and ordinances. The Kaysville Police Department works cohesively with the community, striving to enhance public safety through education, engagement, and enforcement.

Responsibilities

• Respond to calls for the protection of life and property, such as robbery, burglary, family disturbances, theft, and vandalism.
• Assist in investigation and follow-up on scenes and suspects; make arrests.
• Write and compile crime case reports, arrest reports, complaint reports, and traffic accident reports for each case handled during the shift; issue tickets to traffic violators and testify in court.
• Perform traffic enforcement and routine patrol; operate intoxilyzer and radar equipment; monitor traffic movement; report hazards such as blockages or holes.
• Conduct security checks of business and residential establishments.
• Implement training for canines for use in police work.
• Learn problem-solving techniques to address community problems.
• Participate in directed patrols.
• Provide both written and verbal information to the public upon request.
• Perform vehicle, foot, and bicycle patrol.
• Perform related duties as required.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
• Valid Utah driver’s license; must be deemed insurable and able to operate City-owned vehicles.
• Peace Officer Certification from Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) is preferred.
• Must acquire and maintain certification with the Bureau of Criminal Identification.
• Must acquire and maintain certifications in the use of firearms, less-lethal devices, CPR, and all other related law enforcement tools and applications.

Skills

• Knowledge of police terminology and practices; knowledge of municipal and state law.
• Knowledge of standard safety practices and procedures relating to police operations and equipment.
• Skill in the use of firearms, operation of police vehicles, and all related police equipment.
• Ability to wear and carry ballistic vest, handgun, duty belt, and all related police equipment.
• Ability to remain composed in stressful situations; react quickly; establish and maintain effective working relationships with police, other agencies, and the public.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
