About the role
The Janesville Police Department seeks to uphold the law, maintain order, prevent crime, and protect life and property. This position requires a dynamic individual capable of handling a wide range of duties, including physical and psychological challenges.
Responsibilities
- Patrol assigned areas of the city, responding to reports of criminal activity and citizen requests for service.
- Respond to emergency calls, including accidents, rescue efforts, and search and rescue missions.
- Investigate criminal and civil offenses, conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations, and make arrests.
- Enforce traffic laws and regulations, issue citations, and assist motorists in distress.
- Provide short-term counseling and assistance to victims of tragic or traumatic events.
- Communicate effectively with the public and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Participate in ongoing training and continuing education to stay updated on police practices and laws.
Requirements
- Minimum age of 18 years old.
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by a minimum 40 college semester credits at time of hire (60 college semester credits for lateral transfer candidates).
- A valid, state-issued driver's license at time of hire.
- A background investigation must be passed.
- A medical examination meeting minimum physical, hearing, and eyesight requirements.
- A United States citizen with no felony criminal record.
- Must meet the requirements of the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards and Training Board.
- Pass a written examination.
- Pass a psychological examination.

- Effective skills in maintaining accurate, detailed, and confidential/sensitive records and information.
- Strong ethics base built upon integrity, honesty, and respect.
- Ability to learn modern police practices, crime reporting, investigation procedures, and legal requirements.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both in verbal and written form, and follow instructions with minimal supervision.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with various stakeholders.
- Ability to tolerate stress and maintain composure in emergency situations.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and use firearms.
- Ability to handle sensitive information professionally and maintain confidentiality.
