The Cranford Police Department is a proactive, forward-thinking law enforcement agency located in Union County, New Jersey, staffed by 55 sworn officers and multiple civilian team members. The organization is structured into specialized divisions, including Patrol, Investigative, Training and Community Outreach, and Records, each focused on distinct operational responsibilities. These divisions work collaboratively to respond to emergencies, investigate crimes and accidents, engage with community stakeholders, and prevent illegal activity. Civilian personnel support administrative, traffic maintenance, communications, and clerical functions, contributing to efficient department operations.

This full-time, on-site Police Officer role is based in Cranford, NJ. The Police Officer will perform uniformed patrol duties, respond to calls for service, enforce local and state laws, and conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations into crimes, incidents, and traffic accidents. Daily responsibilities include community policing activities, traffic enforcement, report writing, evidence documentation, and participation in court proceedings as required. The role also involves collaborating with other divisions, engaging in training and community outreach initiatives, and maintaining high professional and ethical standards while interacting with residents, businesses, and visitors.

Requirements

• Eligibility to serve as a Police Officer under applicable New Jersey requirements, including meeting background, character, and legal standards.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework or degree in criminal justice or related field is beneficial.
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Physical fitness sufficient to perform patrol, response, and related duties; ability to meet department fitness and medical standards.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices, including Law Enforcement and Police operations.
• Ability to conduct and support Criminal Investigations and properly handle and document Evidence.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear reports and testify effectively.
• Ability to remain calm under pressure, exercise sound judgment, and make quick, informed decisions in emergency situations.
