POLICE OFFICER
Close/First Review Date: 09/06/2026. Work Location: District-wide. This is a 12-month, 40-hour per week position with varying work hours and schedule as needed. Represented by the California School Employees Association (CSEA), Chapter 363.
About the role
Under the direction of the Police Chief or assigned administrator, the Police Officer performs law enforcement, security, traffic control, and public information duties to provide a safe environment for students, staff, and the general public on District property. The role involves protecting District property through proactive programs and traditional law enforcement procedures, and enforcing California Vehicle Code, State Penal Code, Education Code, and District regulations.
Responsibilities
- Patrol designated areas of the Community College District to preserve law and order, prevent crimes, and enforce laws, regulations, and ordinances.
- Ensure safety of students, staff, the general public, and District facilities through inspections on foot and in a patrol vehicle.
- Check buildings for physical safety and security; inspect doors, windows, and gates; address unusual or suspicious activity.
- Prevent unauthorized entry and report presence of unauthorized persons on grounds or in buildings.
- Investigate disturbances, apprehend suspects, make arrests, issue citations, and contact local law enforcement for transport.
- Prepare investigative, crime, follow-up, and incident reports relating to observed violations.
- Respond to complaints, hazardous situations, and incidents putting students, staff, or the public at risk.
- Conduct investigations of reported injuries and accidents; interview victims, complainants, witnesses, and suspects.
- Testify and present evidence in court; participate in and conduct criminal investigations involving crimes against persons and property, auto theft, and narcotics.
- Provide security at District functions; open and close buildings and rooms for meetings.
- Direct traffic, control parking, and ensure safe movement of vehicles in parking areas.
- Detect and report fire hazards; extinguish small blazes and report fires to the local Fire Department using emergency communications protocols.
- Respond to fire and burglar alarms; summon police and fire department personnel as needed.
- Direct traffic at emergencies, special events, or congested situations.
- Cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in apprehending offenders and investigating offenses.
- Assure proper functioning of equipment; notify personnel regarding impaired equipment or malfunctions.
- Enhance public relations by providing information and assistance to students, staff, and the public.
- Answer questions concerning local and State laws, procedures, and department activities.
Requirements
- A U.S. high school diploma, GED certificate, or high school equivalency certificate, or a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited or approved college/university (per California Government Code 1031(e)).
- Completion of at least an 884-hour California P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy within the past three years and 2,500 work hours with a P.O.S.T. accredited public safety agency including verifiable field training, or possession of a valid California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate.
- Must pass a required background check for police department personnel.
- Valid California Driver’s License.
- Current First Aid and CPR cards within a reasonable time after employment.
Skills
- Methods, practices, and procedures of effective law enforcement including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, investigation, and identification.
- Pertinent federal, state, local, and District laws and ordinances, including California Penal Code, State Education Code, Motor Vehicle Code, Health and Safety Code, and business and professional codes.
- Criminal law and criminal procedures, including apprehension, arrest, custody, rules of evidence, and preservation of evidence.
- Basic interviewing and interrogation techniques.
- Use and maintenance of firearms, vehicle operations, safe driving practices, police radio broadcasting procedures, and crowd/vehicle/pedestrian control.
- Sufficient math skills to record distances, numbers, and times.
- Sufficient writing skills to prepare professional reports.
- Human relations skills to resolve confrontations, influence behavior, and convey a positive image of the organization.
- Ability to perform duties effectively with minimal supervision and use tools/equipment safely.
- Analyze situations quickly and objectively; determine and take effective action.
- Use appropriate defense measures to protect self or others in adverse situations.
- Meet physical stature, endurance, and agility standards established by the District.
- Maintain two-way radio communication with local authorities, District dispatch, and administrators.
- Administer first aid in emergency situations.
- Communicate effectively in a multi-ethnic setting and interact with District staff, outside agency personnel, and the public.

Pay
Annual salary range: $107,945 - $131,696 (Range 118: Classified Salary Schedule Fiscal Year 2026-2027). Starting placement is generally at Step 1.
