Police Officer

Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant or Police Captain when under special assignments, is expected to patrol the City in the prevention of crime and the preservation of law and order, to respond to public assistance requests as necessary to protect life and property, and to perform related work as required.

• Enforces traffic and criminal laws of the City, State and Federal governments;
• Operates motorized equipment on an assigned shift to observe for violation of laws, suspicious cars and persons and disturbances of law and order;
• Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints;
• Provides escort or guard services for parades, funerals or public meetings;
• Participates in training conferences and programs and practices the use of firearms;
• Directs traffic;
• Checks business establishments for unlocked doors and windows;
• Reports unsafe conditions existing in streets or other public facilities;
• Patrols liquor license premises and other establishments;
• Ensures the proper treatment of people with special disabilities;
• Captures and preserves evidence;
• Interrogates witnesses and suspects;
• Prepares log of activities and crime and incident reports;
• Investigates complaints;
• Reports abandoned or damaged vehicles;
• Serves subpoenas;
• Provides escort or guard services for parades, funerals or public meetings;
• Participates in training conferences and programs and practices the use of firearms;
• Observes and reports conditions conducive to crime.

Requirements

• High School diploma, GED, or an equivalent certificate of competency;
• A valid Ohio Driver's License;
• No felony convictions;
• Be 21 years of age at the time of appointment;
• Possess State of Ohio Certification as a Police Officer.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of traffic and criminal laws of the City, State and Federal Government;
• Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures;
• Assertiveness in performing duties;
• Use of firearms and other equipment used by department in apprehension of offenders;
• Development of programs to enhance crime prevention;
• Speaking before community groups about programs on crime prevention and issues that affect the police department;
• Developing and improving upon the image of oneself and overall knowledge as a law enforcement professional;
• Understanding and applying laws and regulations relating to the work;
• Maintaining confidentiality;
• Analyzing situations and adopting a quick, effective and reasonable course of action;
• Communicating clearly and effectively both orally and in writing;
• Understanding and following oral directions;
• Learning the use of firearms;
• Being a keen observer and remembering names, faces, and details of incidents;
• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with public, co-workers and supervisors.
