About the Role

The Eugene Police Department (EPD) is a progressive, professional law-enforcement agency serving the city of Eugene, Oregon. EPD works in partnership with the community to promote safety and security, enforce laws, prevent crimes, and safeguard the constitutional rights of all people. This position performs a variety of law enforcement duties, including:

  • Serving as a first responder to incidents and a direct link between the department and the public
  • Responding to and investigating incident scenes
  • Assessing appropriate actions to incidents
  • Patrolling assigned areas and enforcing laws and ordinances
  • Making arrests and preserving crime scene evidence
  • Summarizing events in report format
  • Performing preventative community policing for diverse neighborhoods

Applications received during this period will be considered for a February 8, 2027 hire date.

Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Patrol assigned areas to ensure public safety
  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls
  • Investigate crimes and accidents
  • Enforce laws and ordinances
  • Make arrests and issue citations
  • Prepare detailed reports and maintain records
  • Testify in court as needed
  • Engage in community policing efforts

Requirements

  • At least 21 years of age by February 26, 2027
  • No felony convictions
  • No Class A Misdemeanor convictions within 24 months of application
  • Must be able to work various shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Must meet State requirements for vision, hearing, and basic certification as a law enforcement officer by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST)
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two years of work experience, college coursework, or military experience
  • Valid Oregon driver's license, or ability to obtain by date of hire; must pass driving records check and maintain a driving record that meets the City's standard
  • CPR certification within twelve months of appointment
  • Must pass a police background investigation, physical assessment, drug test, hearing test, and visual acuity test
  • Must reside within 45 minutes of Eugene, OR
  • Must report to work and be ready for duty within 45 minutes of notification
  • Successful applicants will be required to sign a statement agreeing to refrain from using tobacco products while on duty

Pay

All Entry-Police Officers will start at Step 1. Applicants with a minimum of 3 years of full-time police service experience may apply to the Lateral Police Officer posting.

Salary Step Hourly Rate* Step 1 $38.87 Step 2 $40.79 Step 3 $42.77 Step 4 $44.92 Step 5 $47.19 Step 6 $49.55

Recruit Police Officers receive a beginning annual salary of $80,849.60; with experience, education, and training, officers can advance to the top step of $103,064.00 annually.

After three years of employment, officers are eligible for premium pay for education and certification, worth up to 19.5% of an officer's base salary.

Up to 5% shift differential.

This position qualifies for up to an additional 5% of base salary for bilingual pay.

Schedule

  • Must be able to work various shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Officers assigned to a patrol team currently work a 4/10 work schedule (four 10-hour days per week)

Selection Process

  • ORPAT practice sessions (optional): Saturday, September 19, 2026, 9-11 a.m. (Apply by September 17, 2026, to get more information)
  • Written test and ORPAT: Saturday, October 17, 2026
  • Interviews: October 18-20, 2026 (Out-of-state applicants preferred on Sunday, October 18, 2026)
  • Full Background Check: Completed by December 17, 2026
  • Chief Interview: December 23, 2026
  • Psychological Evaluation and Medical Exam: December 28, 2026 - January 4, 2027
  • Projected Date of Hire: February 8, 2027
