Police Officer

About the role

This position provides law enforcement and public safety services to the public, enforces federal and state laws and local ordinances, maintains order and protects life and property, conducts criminal investigations, and performs other public safety-related duties. This position is deemed “safety-sensitive” and is subject to random drug testing under the City’s policies.

Responsibilities

• Patrol assigned districts by motor vehicle, on foot, or other methods; check businesses, stores, homes, and premises for criminal violations, suspicious persons or conditions, fire, or disturbances
• Apprehend, interview, and make arrests for violations of federal, state, and local laws; escort prisoners to holding facilities; register and book prisoners; prepare arrest records and detailed investigative reports
• Respond to citizen complaints; control and disperse crowds; cooperate with other law enforcement agencies and jurisdictions
• Enforce traffic and parking regulations; direct traffic; investigate accidents; submit hazard correction recommendations; administer first aid in emergencies
• Maintain positive community relationships through meetings, collaboration with social agencies, and public engagement
• Prepare and maintain field notes and administrative reports; draft emergency detention orders, search warrants, and legal documents; testify in hearings
• Assist supervisors and act as supervisor in their absence
• Attend periodic training to maintain skills in firearm use, vehicle operation, self-defense, life-saving, and criminal law updates
• Conduct initial and supplementary investigations of crimes including personal violence, theft, stolen vehicles, missing persons, and narcotics-related offenses; participate in undercover investigations
• Collect physical evidence; perform crime scene investigation, photography, and surveillance

Minimum Education and Experience

• Between the ages of 21 and 45, unless otherwise eligible under the Oklahoma Police Pension & Retirement System
• At least 64 hours of college credit from an accredited institution, or
• At least 32 hours of college credit and at least three years of full-time active-duty military service with an honorable discharge, or
• At least 32 hours of college credit and at least three years of full-time experience as a first responder (police officers with arrest powers, firefighters, or paramedic/EMT)

Must not have:

• Any felony conviction
• More than 3 moving traffic violations in the past 5 years
• More than one at-fault accident and two moving traffic violations in the past 5 years
• A conviction for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol (DUI/DWI/APC) at any time
• A conviction for careless or reckless driving in the past 7 years
• A conviction for a “misdemeanor crime of domestic violence”
• A guilty plea or conviction for any misdemeanor in the past 5 years that suggests unfitness for City employment

Misdemeanors older than five years may be reviewed by the Human Resources Director for relevance and rehabilitation. Must undergo a psychological evaluation (e.g., Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory or equivalent). Subsequent to a tentative job offer, must pass a medical examination and pre-employment drug screen.

Must attend and satisfactorily complete, within one year of hire:

• Basic Police Academy as required under Oklahoma Statute 70 O.S., Section 3311 (CLEET)
• Broken Arrow Police Department In-Service Orientation Training
• Field Training Officer Program

Physical Requirements

• Demonstrate physical strength and dexterity; sit for long periods; walk and stand regularly, sometimes for extended durations
• Safely operate a motor vehicle and discharge a firearm in the line of duty
• Possess strength and stamina to chase, subdue fleeing persons, and rescue victims
• Occasionally lift, push, or move objects over 150 pounds
• Visual acuity correctable to 20/20 with no color deficiencies that would impair essential job functions or safety
• Ability to stand, walk, sit, lift/carry, push/pull, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, crawl, reach, twist, and perform rapid mental/muscular coordination
• Meet the City’s physical fitness entrance standards

Work environment includes exposure to extreme weather, loud noise, dirt, mud, insects, dust, and grass. Officers may face bodily attacks and physical harm during arrests. Work involves rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, extended hours, call-backs, and court testimony on days off.

Pay

• Base salary (probationary): $72,004.43
• Lateral pay (with ≥2 years of service): up to $83,956.50
• Maximum base pay (after 10 years): $115,528.50 (excludes bonuses)
