Responsibilities & Duties
- Patrols campus grounds and buildings.
- Safeguards university property.
- Conducts investigations and prepares reports on criminal violations, unsafe conditions, accidents, and disturbances of the peace.
- Gathers evidence and makes arrests that will result in testifying in court.
- Administers medical aid to injured persons.
- Enforces traffic and parking regulations and issues moving and parking citations.
- Maintains a 24-hour operation and provides public safety contact for the university community.
- Performs crowd control duties during special events.
- Responds to alarms and requests for services from the university community.
- Participates in crime prevention, community policing, emergency preparedness, and safety programs.
- Assists other members of the Police Department, such as public safety officers and dispatchers, as well as members of other campus departments.
Requirements
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- High school diploma or equivalent; successful completion of a California P.O.S.T. Basic Academy (or valid waiver) and current California P.O.S.T. certification prior to the date of appointment.
- Valid California Driver License.
- Working knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures.
- Working knowledge of current criminal codes and laws.
- Effective interpersonal skills to resolve a wide variety of sensitive situations.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to write clear and comprehensive reports.
- Demonstrated ability to think and act effectively in emergency and sensitive situations.
- Possession of a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification, or prior law enforcement experience preferred.
- Will be required to achieve and maintain EMT certification.
Qualifications
- A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
- The person holding this position is considered a ‘Campus Security Authority (CSA)’ to report crimes for the federally mandated Clery Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1107 revised March 24, 2017 as a condition of employment.
- The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.
