About the role

The City of Coronado is accepting applications for the position of Police Officer. The ideal candidate will be a community service-oriented individual with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, possessing a strong ability to exercise considerable judgment and initiative.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general police work in the presentation of crime and the enforcement of law and order.
  • Carry out traffic enforcement control and special assignments in specialized phases of police and emergency work.
  • Drive a police vehicle in carrying out duties and may be assigned to special details as needed.
  • Establish order in extreme conditions and in conditions of emergency.

Requirements

  • Lateral Entry: Possession of a California Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate and being employed as a sworn full-time Peace Officer in the state of California within two years from the date of the offer of employment; Successfully completing the P.O.S.T. requalification course if more than two years have passed; Out-of-state lateral applicants must possess a California P.O.S.T. Basic Course Waiver and have been employed as a sworn full-time Peace Officer within two years from the date of the offer of employment.
  • Academy Graduates: Must be in the final phase of an Accredited P.O.S.T. Academy at the time of application and possess an Academy P.O.S.T. Certificate prior to an offer of employment.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Must have a valid California driver’s license.
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be able to pass a background check, polygraph examination, and drug screening.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of discretion, trust, and confidence.
  • Strong ability to exercise considerable judgment and initiative.
  • Community service orientation.

Benefits

  • Retirement Benefit Formula: 3% at 50 for Classic CalPERS members hired before January 1, 2013; 2.7% at 57 for PERRA members hired after January 1, 2013.
  • Tuition Reimbursement: $2000.
  • Uniform Allowance: $1200.

Pay

  • Base Salary: Varies based on experience and qualifications.
  • Pay Incentives: Lateral Police Officer Bonus: $20,000; Police Academy Graduate Bonus: $10,000; Referral Bonus: $2,000 for referring a successful lateral police officer.

Schedule

  • Shifts may vary depending on department needs.
