About the role

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) is seeking lateral applications for Traffic Crash Investigator positions within the Aggressive/Impaired Driving Unit, Motorcycle Officer Program, and Traffic Crash Investigator Unit. These units are part of the Traffic Division, which oversees traffic enforcement, investigation, and criminal enforcement across Davidson County.

Responsibilities

  • Complete a training program covering criminal law, firearms training, first aid, traffic accident investigation, traffic law enforcement, human relations, crime scene research, patrol procedures, departmental policies, report writing, and other related areas.
  • Attend specialized training courses such as Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs), Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE), Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) School, and other relevant training.
  • Engage in proactive traffic and DUI enforcement activities.
  • Investigate and report on property damage and personal injury crashes, including hit-and-run crashes, life-threatening, and fatal crashes.
  • Work flexible hours, including rotating shifts and responding to emergencies.

Requirements

  • At least two (2) years as a full-time, certified (Tennessee P.O.S.T. Certification or equivalent State certification) law enforcement officer.
  • No more than 3 years since last break-in service.
  • Valid Driver License.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Successfully complete a medical and psychological examination.
  • Pass a criminal history background check.
  • Pass drug testing.

Qualifications

  • At least two (2) years full-time work experience, certified (Tennessee P.O.S.T. Certification or equivalent State certification) law enforcement officer.
  • Less than two (2) years full-time work experience, certified (Tennessee P.O.S.T. Certification or equivalent State certification) law enforcement officer.
  • Two (2) or more years law enforcement experience but NOT certified.

Skills

  • Strong working knowledge of Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, and Rules of Evidence.
  • Good communication skills and ability to make sound decisions in stressful and confrontational situations.
  • Self-motivated and competent in all responsibilities required of any officer.
  • Willingness to work within a team environment.
  • Ability to work any day and shift, as needed.

Pay

  • Step 3: $81,114.00 to Step 15: $102,871.00 without education incentive.
  • Step 3: $83,547.42 to Step 15: $105,957.13 with Associate’s degree.
  • Step 3: $85,980.84 to Step 15: $109,043.26 with Bachelor’s degree.

Schedule

The Metro Nashville Police Department operates 24/7. Employees must be able to work any day and/or shift, as needed.
