About the role

The Police Commander position at East Carolina University's Police Department is a high-level, administrative, supervisory, or managerial law enforcement position. With full powers of arrest, employees enforce the laws of the State and the United States Government. They have law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a specific geographic jurisdiction associated with State property.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate appropriateness of officer responses;
  • Designate assignments;
  • Direct needed resources;
  • Interpret laws, ordinances, and department policies and procedures;
  • Evaluate and train officers;
  • Conduct pre-shift briefings;
  • Conduct broader, regularly scheduled reviews of their respective divisions;
  • Review all reports and investigations accomplished during a shift;
  • Coordinate activities;
  • Conduct performance reviews;
  • Assign personnel and tasks;
  • Provide input concerning operational planning;
  • Research and contribute to the development of agency policies and procedures;
  • Draft and present documents, plans, or other operational matters.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree or greater and 7 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience;
  • At least 3 years of the experience must have been in a supervisory role equivalent to a Police Sergeant or greater;
  • Certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible for out of state lateral hires;
  • Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of sworn law enforcement experience in higher education, or an associate’s degree and 9 years of such experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory role equivalent to Police Sergeant or higher.

Qualifications

  • NC Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate.
