Entrance exam scheduled for September 12, 2026. Police Cadets are non-sworn personnel who are pursuing or intend to pursue certification in a certified police academy and obtain a peace officer license with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). Individuals selected are expected to agree to serve a minimum of three years with the department after graduation.
Responsibilities
- Responds to routine and complex emergency requests and situations; maintains readiness for emergency calls; answers and responds to radio or telephone dispatches.
- Performs patrol of assigned area on foot, by motorcycle, or in patrol cars; responds to citizen requests or service dispatches; quells disturbances; investigates suspicious or illegal activities, persons, or establishments; enforces applicable laws related to protection of life and property.
- Conducts interviews and questions witnesses, victims, and suspects; collects and preserves evidence; secures crime scenes; issues warnings and citations; arrests and transports violators to assigned facilities; inspects prisoners and jails for weapons or contraband.
- Coordinates with and provides information to staff and the public to disseminate educational information on crime safety/prevention.
- Prepares and maintains suspect illness and injury, accident, arrest, and other critical incident reports, records, logs, and other documentation.
- As assigned, may serve as detectives, drug enforcement task force members, school resource officers, identification officers, field training officers, or perform other assigned functions.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Requirements
- 30 semester hours of college credit with a 2.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
- Must meet licensing eligibility requirements through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
- Valid Texas driver's license.
- Must pass CJIS background checks from Texas DPS and maintain security clearance as required by agencies associated with and working for the City of West University Place.
