Essential Duties
- Performs a variety of learning activities related to law enforcement.
- Reports to academy location as scheduled and on time.
- Studies, participates, engages, and takes a proactive approach, while being actively involved, in all facets of the academic rigors of being a police cadet.
- Maintains personal and professional behavior at the highest of moral, ethical, and legal standards that represents the profession and the Seguin Police Department in the highest regard.
- Performs physical fitness training and activities at a level required by the academy.
- Maintains passing grades and achieves certifications in all academic and physical courses of study.
- Adheres to all rules, regulations, and safety protocols of the police academy.
- Communicates with the Administrative Sergeant to keep the department abreast of the status and progression within the academy.
- Successfully completes the academy in the scheduled timeframe.
- Takes and passes the state licensing exam becoming a TCOLE licensed peace officer with other cadets in academy class.
Other Important Duties
- Performs such other duties as may be assigned by academy staff or departmental supervisors.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Knowledge of: General studies, High School Diploma.
- Ability to: Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, academy policy, rules, regulations, and state laws; and understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; compute rate, ratio, and percent; and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
Physical Ability
- Must be able to learn to make forceful arrests using own body strength;
- Learn to demonstrate proficiency with firearms;
- Grasp ability to be able to legally and properly utilize non-lethal or lethal force and related equipment/weapons where applicable;
- Simulate forcible arrests in training environment;
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 165 pounds.
- Regularly required to talk and hear.
- Frequently required to sit, use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms;
- Utilize the sense of smell.
- Occasionally required to stand, walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, run and jump.
Acceptable Experience And Training
- A high school diploma.
Certificates And Licenses Required
- A valid Texas Driver's License.
