About the role

This position serves as the recognized authority in podiatric medicine, providing expert-level, comprehensive podiatric medical and surgical services. A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021). This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children.

Responsibilities

  • Provides expert podiatric surgical and medical care including prevention, health maintenance, early diagnosis, complex surgical, and follow-up services.
  • Serves as consultant to other healthcare professionals in all matters pertaining to podiatric patient care.
  • Interviews, examines patients, reviews past medical history, and requests/performs diagnostic tests and examinations as necessary.
  • Maintains clinical and administrative records as required.
  • Admits patients to the hospital, consults with medical staff after admission, and discharges for patient care referrals.
  • Performs surgical repair of bone fractures, soft tissue injuries, congenital and structural deformities, and infections involving the foot, ankle, and leg.
  • Diagnoses, directs, prescribes, or provides treatment, and arranges for specialized care or hospitalization.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree from a school of podiatric medicine accredited by the American Podiatric Medical Association’s Council on Podiatric Medical Education (APMA).
  • Passed the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners (NBPME) or the American Podiatric Medical Licensing Examination (APMLE).
  • Full, current, and unrestricted license to practice podiatric medicine in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • One or more full years of experience in the practice of podiatry in an office, clinic, or hospital.
  • Completed 1 to 3 years of residency training and performed surgical procedures involving forefoot, midfoot, rearfoot, lower leg including amputations within the last 18 months (surgical logs required).
  • U.S. Citizenship is required; Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Must obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements.
  • Must comply with the IHS Employee Immunization Policy related to vaccine-preventable diseases for healthcare workers.
  • Must successfully complete a federal background investigation and demonstrate financial responsibility.

Qualifications

To qualify, your resume must demonstrate sufficient experience and/or education to perform the duties of the position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work. You must clearly identify duties, responsibilities, and total hours per week for each position held.

For GS-14 and above, applicants must have one full year of professional podiatry experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, including:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of foot, ankle, and lower leg problems.
  • Setting fractures, prescribing physical therapy or drugs, or performing surgery on feet, ankles, or legs.
  • Treatment of conditions such as Achilles tendinitis, ganglia of the feet, diabetic neuropathy, foot ulcers, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, stress fractures, or bacterial, viral, and fungal infections.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.

Education

You must submit a copy of your transcripts or a list of courses including titles, credit hours completed, and grades. Unofficial transcripts are accepted in the application package; official transcripts will be required if selected. Only education from schools accredited by institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education may be credited. For foreign education, a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency must be provided.
