About the role

The Metrology Technician provides support in Test, Maintenance, and Diagnostic Equipment (TMDE) calibration and repair. They perform entry-level calibration and inspection of measurement and test equipment under supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Test, calibrate, and maintain electrical, mechanical, electromechanical, analytical, and electronic measuring, recording and indicating instruments and equipment for conformance to established performance standards.
  • Distinguish between base and derived International System of Units (SI) and how to apply, convert, and use them.
  • Select appropriate standards based on measurement requirements, equipment availability, and specifications.
  • Understand principles and hierarchy of standards and importance of measurement traceability.
  • Apply MTE specifications and their characteristics to the calibration results.
  • Understands proficiency testing, Measurement Assurance Program (MAP) concepts.
  • Know components of calibration procedures, uses common manual and automated calibration methods, and comply with regulations and general industry practices.
  • Recognize the impact that the environment has on calibration, understand MTE calibration and validation processes.
  • Manage records and maintain document control systems that support calibration and measurement systems.
  • Understand basic measurement uncertainty terms, understand uncertainty budget development, calculate uncertainty estimate by applying technical mathematics and basic statistical techniques.
  • Distinguish between quality system components, recognize methods and tools used to develop, improve, and review a quality management system.
  • Identify nonconformances and assess the validity of previous measurement results.
  • Understand quality auditing processes and documentation requirements.
  • Understand safety requirements, identify potential hazards and use personal protective equipment.

Requirements

  • Experience to include inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, overhauling, aligning, calibrating, and certifying TMDE, using metrology laboratory working standards.
  • Strong working knowledge of measurement uncertainty and traceability.
  • Experience with calibration software and automated systems.
  • Completion of a Military DOD metrology training program or similar formal training, such as the Precision Measurement Equipment Course (PMEL), or be a Certified Calibration Technician through the American Society for Quality unless waived by the COR.
  • Calibration technicians must comply with all ANSI/NCSL Z540.1 certification requirements.
  • Technical training or associate’s degree; 0–2 years calibration or instrumentation experience.

Pay
