About the role
Are you someone who enjoys preparing good food and takes pride in caring for others? We are looking for a compassionate and dedicated Cook to join our team in our cozy, 80‑bed skilled nursing facility. Nestled in the countryside, our facility has a warm, home‑like feeling where residents, families, and staff know one another and genuinely care about each other. We believe that mealtimes are more than just serving food; they’re an important part of our residents’ comfort, health, and daily happiness. In this role you will work alongside our dietary team to prepare nutritious, flavorful meals that meet residents’ dietary needs and preferences while maintaining a clean, safe, and organized kitchen environment.
Work Environment
This position operates in a small hometown nursing facility.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and cook a variety of meals according to planned menus, dietary guidelines, and individual resident needs, including specialized diets (e.g., low sodium, diabetic, gluten‑free).
- Follow standardized recipes and portion‑control procedures to ensure consistency and quality of meals.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen, including proper handling and storage of food items in compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Adjust recipes and meal plans to accommodate residents’ dietary restrictions and preferences while ensuring all nutritional requirements are met.
- Assist in ordering and stocking food supplies, ensuring inventory levels are maintained and all food items are stored properly.
- Work with dietary staff and other healthcare professionals to plan and review menus and address resident concerns or changes in dietary needs.
- Maintain accurate records of food temperatures, portion sizes, and dietary modifications as required.
- Participate in ongoing training and development opportunities to stay current with food safety standards, dietary trends, and best practices in food preparation.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Nursing home experience preferred, but training will be provided for the right candidate.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and move heavy objects, stand for extended periods, lift and transfer residents as needed, and perform tasks that require physical stamina and endurance.
- Communications: Warm and respectful verbal and written communication skills; ability to work well with team members, support a positive environment, and build caring relationships with residents and their families.
- Skills: Strong knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices; ability to follow recipes and dietary guidelines accurately; excellent organizational and time‑management skills; strong communication and interpersonal skills.
