Plumber's Helper

About the Role

Assist assigned plumbers in the installation and repair of plumbing fixtures including pipe and gas systems. Support all types of plumbing and pipefitting tasks, as well as maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems.

Responsibilities

• Assist in all types of plumbing and pipe-fitting tasks required in the installation and repair of sprinkler systems, drinking fountains, and restroom facilities.
• Carry material and equipment to designated locations; cut pipes to the correct length using pipe cutters; thread pipe with stock and dies; bend pipe if necessary.
• Attach required valves, fittings, and controls to repair plumbing and gas systems; pour molten lead over pipe joints to seal them; test pipe systems to identify leaks.
• Assist with the installation, connection, testing, and maintenance of boilers, water heaters, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, cooling towers, and steam generators.
• Lay out, install, and maintain plumbing for water sprinkler systems in parks and playgrounds.
• Assist with the repair of major plumbing breakdowns such as clogged sewers, drains, and fixtures.
• Participate in the installation and repair of vents and venting needed for water-heating equipment.
• Monitor boiler controls, evaluate water levels, pressure, and temperature.
• Perform basic repairs of furnaces, boilers, air-conditioning, and refrigeration units.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED, supplemented by thirty (30) credit hours of vocational training in plumbing or heating and cooling systems.
• One (1) year of plumbing or pipefitting experience.
• Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one by the date of hire.
• Possession of a City Operator’s Permit (COP) within six (6) months from the date of hire.

Working Conditions

• Indoor and outdoor environment; travel from site to site.
• Exposure to noise, dust, fumes, infectious waste, and inclement weather conditions.
• Physical demands include standing, walking, crouching, and bending for prolonged periods; light to moderate lifting; and operating motorized vehicles.
