Plumber

About the Role

Under the direction of the Director of Maintenance, the Plumber is responsible for maintaining and servicing plumbing systems in City-owned buildings and schools. This includes installing, repairing, and inspecting systems for water supply, drainage, heating, and waste disposal. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in the plumbing trade, along with a solid understanding of state and local codes and regulations. This is a skilled journeyman-level role requiring the ability to perform and occasionally oversee a wide range of plumbing and heating system repairs and installations. The work supports essential City operations and ensures the comfort, safety, and functionality of public facilities.

Responsibilities

• Install and repair water pipes, valves, fixtures, and drainage systems.
• Maintain and troubleshoot plumbing systems; replace defective or leaky components.
• Open clogged drains and perform necessary connections to plumbing fixtures.
• Assemble, solder, or bolt pipe sections, valves, and couplings.
• Read and interpret blueprints, plans, and technical diagrams to lay out and perform skilled work on water, drainage, heating, and ventilating systems.
• Perform pipe fitting work using steel, iron, brass, copper, and other materials.
• Inspect and test pipelines and plumbing for safety and functionality.
• Repair thermostatic controls and related heating system components.
• Collaborate with other trades and laborers on maintenance projects.
• Perform other manual duties related to plumbing work and work in conjunction with other trades and laborers as necessary.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Three (3) – Five (5) years of experience working in the plumbing trade.
• Possession of a Journeyman Plumbers License.
• Valid driver’s license, Class D.
• Strong knowledge of standard plumbing practices, tools, materials, and techniques.
• Familiarity with federal, state, and local plumbing codes and building regulations.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and technical specifications.
• Hands-on skill using plumbing tools and equipment.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team, including coordination with other trades, laborers, and City staff.

Working Conditions

The incumbent works in various dynamic municipal buildings and locations. While performing the duties, the incumbent is required to interact and communicate frequently with the public, government officials, other staff members, and boards, and/or third parties transacting business with the City. Frequent periods of outside work may be entailed, subject to all weather conditions and extremes. Incumbents may be required to work at any time during the 24-hour day to respond to weather-related or emergency needs.

Physical Requirements

The Plumber role involves performing physically demanding tasks in support of plumbing installation, maintenance, and repair throughout City facilities. To successfully carry out these responsibilities, the incumbent must be able to:

• Safely use and operate plumbing tools, equipment, and machinery with appropriate coordination and dexterity.
• Move throughout municipal buildings and sites, including navigating stairways, mechanical rooms, basements, and other varied environments.
• Climb ladders, access crawl spaces, and work in confined, tight, or elevated areas for extended periods as needed.
• Lift, carry, and position materials, tools, and plumbing components weighing up to 50 pounds from ground level to shoulder height on a regular basis.
• Work in conditions that may involve exposure to moisture, noise, temperature fluctuations, and other environmental factors typical of plumbing work.

Schedule

Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM.

Pay

Starting salary $27.82/hour, with annual increases up to $38.51 per hour.
