About the Role

The Plumber and Steamfitter I installs, repairs, alters, and maintains fluid transmission systems, sanitary fixtures, heating systems, low and high pressure steam lines, condensate lines, water lines, sprinkler lines, sewer lines, and performs other related work. This includes trade-related asbestos abatement and repairs or initiation of repairs on building systems such as pneumatic control systems, HVAC systems, cooling towers, pumps, and related equipment. The role involves using specialized testing and diagnostic equipment, collaborating with Control Technicians and trade personnel, and exercising functional supervision of lower-grade employees.

Responsibilities

• Instruct, advise, and mentor employees, technicians, and journeymen in the operation and maintenance of campus plumbing, steam, mechanical systems, HVAC systems, and related components, including pneumatic, electronic, and electro-mechanical controls, cooling towers, pumps, and controlled devices.
• Respond to, inspect, test, troubleshoot, repair, and initiate repairs for plumbing, steam, sanitary systems, mechanical systems, cooling towers, and pumps, including pneumatic and self-contained valves in HVAC and hydronic systems, using microprocessor and diagnostic equipment.
• Interact with contractors regarding the operation, maintenance, and repair of campus systems.
• Perform preventive maintenance services and utilize computer programs to operate, maintain, calibrate, and adjust building HVAC systems.
• Assist Engineering staff in drawing review, inspection, and troubleshooting for new equipment, buildings, upgrades, and equipment replacement.
• Drive a motorized vehicle around campus to residential buildings.
• Install, repair, alter, and maintain hot and cold water lines, steam lines, deionized water systems, sprinkler systems, glass piping, sewer pipes (cast iron, plastic, ceramic), pumps, traps, valves, radiators, toilets, sinks, showers, and other fixtures, including estimating labor and materials.
• Cut and thread pipe using stocks and dies, power threading machines, wrenches, power saws, and other tools.
• Use oxyacetylene torches and/or welding equipment to braze coils and pipes.
• Drill or cut holes through floors, walls, and ceilings; perform asbestos abatement as required.
• Perform related duties such as erecting scaffolding, rigging, or ladders; laying out drop clothes; fabricating miscellaneous metal products; sharpening and tempering tools; cleaning tools and equipment; preparing work reports; and training other employees.

Requirements

• Current, valid Massachusetts Plumbing and Gasfitting License/Journeyman.
• Basic knowledge of the plumbing and steamfitting trades.
• Willingness to take an annual pulmonary function physical test.
• Current, valid Class D driver's license.
• Experience as a journeyman plumber.
• Associated Worker Certificate / Asbestos Abatement Worker License (must be obtained within six months of hire).
• Pump Certificate (must be obtained within six months of hire).
• Metasys Facility Operators Certificate (must be obtained within six months of hire).
• Ability to provide off-shift coverage as requested.

Qualifications

• Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, techniques, practices, materials, and tools used in the plumbing and steamfitting trade.
• Working knowledge of Massachusetts Plumbing and Gas Codes and their applications.
• Working knowledge of the general and unique hazards and safety precautions associated with the plumbing and steamfitter trade.
• Ability to read, interpret, and work from plans, sketches, and oral instructions.
• Ability to make basic assessments of time and materials required for work assignments.
• Ability to supervise and instruct helpers in plumbing and steamfitting tasks.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and logs.
• Skill and knowledge to interpret blueprints, schematics, elementary diagrams, and logic diagrams associated with HVAC systems.
• Ability to generate, implement, understand, and respond to verbal and written instructions.
• Knowledge of safety practices, preventive maintenance practices, and the operation of standard testing equipment.
• Skill in using hand, power, and measurement tools of the trade.
• Skill and ability to work independently.
• Ability to use oxyacetylene torches.

Additional Details

This position is designated as essential and on-call, requiring the obligation to work overtime, return to work between scheduled shifts when directed, and report to work during delays, early departures, or closures. The incumbent must update the service desk with their current phone number.

Supervision Received: Direct supervision from classified employees or managers of higher grade, including on-the-job training, work assignments, and performance reviews.

Supervision Exercised: May exercise functional supervision over employees of lower grade.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in indoor and/or outdoor environments, requiring frequent lifting, bending, tool use, or equipment use. May involve work in confined spaces or at heights.

Schedule

Monday - Friday, 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM (2nd shift).

Pay

Pay Grade: AFSCME Grade 17 (refer to the Classified Step Scale for details).
