About the role
Incumbents repair, maintain, and alter plumbing sanitary piping and fixtures, roof drainage systems, storm drain piping and fixtures, hot and cold water distribution systems, gas distribution systems, steam and hot water heating units, fire sprinkler system emergency response, backflow prevention systems, safety equipment, irrigation systems, safety eyewash and deluge shower piping systems, special lab acid waste and water systems, industrial cafeteria equipment, and perform related work as required. This is the entry-level skilled trade job in this series.
Responsibilities
- Repair, maintain, and alter plumbing systems including sanitary piping, fixtures, roof drainage, storm drain piping, and hot/cold water distribution
- Maintain and service gas distribution systems, steam and hot water heating units
- Respond to fire sprinkler system emergencies and maintain backflow prevention systems
- Maintain safety equipment, irrigation systems, eyewash and deluge shower piping systems
- Service special lab acid waste and water systems and industrial cafeteria equipment
- Interpret plumbing plans, schematics, and drawings
- Detect and locate causes of plumbing failures or breakdowns
- Perform emergency repairs and act quickly in emergency situations
- Maintain accurate records and documentation
- Work in confined spaces, climb ladders and scaffolds, and lift heavy objects
Requirements
- Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Plumbing License
- Knowledge of state and local plumbing codes
- Ability to interpret and apply plumbing regulations and practices
- Knowledge of plumbing and steam fitting principles and theory
- Familiarity with hand tools (wrenches, hammers, pliers, taps, dies) and power tools (saws, drills, torches, gauges)
- Knowledge of testing equipment and safety procedures in plumbing
- Ability to read and interpret plumbing plans and schematics
- Manual dexterity and physical ability to work in confined spaces and at heights
- Minimum 3 years' experience installing, servicing, or inspecting plumbing systems, gas distribution systems, and boiler components
- Valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
- 5 years' experience as a Massachusetts licensed plumber
- Willingness to be on essential personnel list for facility emergencies and university closings
- Experience operating air and hydraulic lifts
- Knowledge of steam and HVAC systems
- Ability to diagnose boiler controls (gas valves, relays, aquastats, pressuretrols, power burners)
- Experience using electrical testing meters
- Similar institution experience
Pay
Bi-weekly salary ranges from $2,322.44 (Step 1) to $3,160.35 (Step 14), with anticipated union rate increases pending.
