Platform Engineer (Azure, Kubernetes, Terraform
About Delavan Holdings
Delavan Holdings is a diversified holding company with interests spanning automotive retail, RV dealerships, hospitality, logistics, industrial services, and professional services across Wisconsin and the greater Midwest. Its portfolio includes Kunes Auto Group, Kunes RV, Lake Lawn Resort, Camp Timber‑Lee, G10 Fulfillment, and Ignition Dealer Services. The Office of the CTO is building a small, senior technology team that serves every operating company, and this role is the first dedicated platform engineer.
About the Role
The Platform Engineer will build and operate the Azure cloud environment, Kubernetes platforms, and infrastructure‑as‑code for a multi‑company portfolio. This on‑site, full‑time position owns cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, and observability for internal applications and AI workloads.
Responsibilities
- Build, operate, and maintain the Azure environment end‑to‑end, including subscriptions, identity and access, networking, compute, storage, and cost discipline.
- Define and manage infrastructure as code in Terraform or Bicep, stored in GitHub with code review and documentation.
- Operate container platforms (AKS/EKS) for internal applications and services, administer API and AI gateways (routing, authentication, rate limiting, policy).
- Own monitoring, alerting, and observability: create actionable dashboards, respond to infrastructure incidents, write RCAs, and conduct lessons‑learned reviews.
- Diagnose root causes, ship fixes, communicate status to affected teams, and maintain infrastructure for the data platform in partnership with the data and analytics team.
- Manage backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity for platform‑hosted systems, including regular recovery testing.
- Handle credentials, access, and data responsibly: enforce least‑privilege access, keep secrets out of code, and respect data governance.
- Take changes through design, build, test, and release, deploying through staged Azure environments with controlled releases.
- Participate in sprint planning, backlog refinement, stand‑ups, reviews, and retrospectives; keep work tracked in Asana.
- Partner with forward‑deployed engineers, the data team, and IT to unblock deployments and simplify safe pathways.
- Leverage AI tools at an advanced level for writing and reviewing infrastructure code, diagnosing issues, drafting documentation, and automating routine tasks, while verifying output.
Requirements
- 3+ years in platform engineering, infrastructure, DevOps, cloud, or site reliability engineering operating production systems.
- Hands‑on Azure experience: Entra ID, RBAC, service principals, managed identities, virtual networks, DNS, firewalls, private endpoints, core compute and storage services.
- Production Kubernetes experience (AKS or EKS), including deployments, networking, scaling, and upgrades.
- Infrastructure as code with Terraform, Bicep, or similar; depth of underlying skills valued over specific tool.
- Strong PowerShell or Bash scripting within a modern workflow (Git, GitHub, code review, testing, documentation).
- Strong SQL skills and comfort supporting database and data platform infrastructure.
- Monitoring and observability experience with Azure Monitor, Application Insights, Datadog, or equivalent, used for real incident response.
- Backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity practice, including recovery testing, plus cloud cost monitoring and management.
- Sound security and data governance habits: least‑privilege access, secret management, careful handling of sensitive data across multiple entities.
- Advanced fluency with AI tools in engineering work, paired with judgment to verify outputs.
- Strong written communication and documentation habits; ability to work with technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience administering an API gateway such as Kong or Azure API Management, or an AI gateway routing LLM traffic.
- Proficiency in Python for automation and tooling.
- Experience with event‑driven architectures (queues, pub/sub, streaming) e.g., Redis.
- Background operating under financial‑reporting controls or audit requirements (change logging, access review).
- Track record building a platform from near‑zero, knowing where early shortcuts are safe.
- Commitment to treating documentation and runbooks as deliverables, not cleanup.
- Background in automotive retail, hospitality, logistics, or multi‑entity/holding‑company environments.
Benefits
- Standard Delavan Holdings package: health, dental, vision, 401(k), PTO.
