About the Role

Operates, maintains, and repairs high-pressure steam and hot water boilers, water supply and return systems, and related equipment. Manages computerized energy management systems controlling boiler operations, auxiliary equipment, and HVAC systems.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to mechanical, electrical, or plumbing calls; troubleshoot and coordinate necessary repairs.
  • Conduct boiler and water testing, analyze results, and add chemicals to maintain proper system functions.
  • Clean, inspect, and maintain boilers by performing chemical cleaning, repairing brickwork, replacing tubes, calibrating controls, and maintaining boiler combustion and emissions.
  • Assist with maintenance and repair of water and sewage pumping, filtration, and treatment equipment.
  • Perform work on underground steam distribution lines.
  • Handle hazardous materials and respond to incidents with potential environmental impact, including oil spills, chemical spills, air quality issues, stack emissions, and water contamination.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools, including those specific to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing trades.
  • May supervise subordinate staff, including Plant Utilities Assistants, Facility Operations Assistants, and other trades staff.
  • May be required to obtain asbestos removal certification or operate and test campus pool equipment.
  • May be required to obtain a NYS Class C water operator's license.

Requirements

  • Completion of the NY State Civil Service decentralized exam for Plant Utilities Engineer 1 and reachable status.
  • One of the following:
    • HVAC certificate or diploma plus four (4) years of full-time hands-on qualifying experience.
    • Associate's degree plus two (2) years of qualifying experience.
    • Satisfactory completion of a training course in fundamentals of stationary engineering, plus either:
      • Satisfactory completion of appropriate mechanical or electrical experience, or
      • Four years' experience in the operation and/or maintenance of high-pressure steam boilers or auxiliary high-pressure steam lines and equipment.
  • Ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position satisfactorily.
  • Willingness to enter confined spaces.
  • Completion of an annual respirator test.
  • Valid NYS Driver's license.
