Plant Utilities Engineer 1

Responsibilities

• Assigned to either the field heating force or the Central Heating Plant based on University work requirements.
• Central Heating Plant assignment: operation and maintenance of gas and coal‑fired high‑temperature hot water heating plant.
• Field heating force assignment: operation, maintenance, repair and alterations of mechanical systems serving University buildings.
• Typical assignments: operating and installing the energy management system; maintaining water treatment for open and closed‑loop systems; operating and troubleshooting gas‑fired satellite boilers; overhauling pumps and HVAC equipment; recommending and developing energy conservation projects.
• Supervision of a small work force, including Assistant Plant Utilities Engineers and Facility Operations Assistant 1.
• Perform any related tasks listed in the New York State Department of Civil Service Classification Standard.

Minimum Qualifications

• Special application required during continuous recruitment period.
• Decentralized exam position.
• Satisfactory completion of a training course in fundamentals of stationary engineering **and** either satisfactory completion of appropriate mechanical or electrical experience **or** four years of experience in operation and/or maintenance of high‑pressure type steam boilers or auxiliary high‑pressure steam lines and equipment.
• Maintain awareness of typical workplace hazards and special campus hazards (asbestos, toxic materials, unsafe equipment, unsafe situations).
• Follow established safe work practices and use appropriate protective equipment.

Schedule

• May require shift work and weekends.
• Valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS required.
• Initial assignment: field, Monday–Friday 3:00 pm–11:30 pm.
• Position deemed essential; candidate must be available for emergency call‑in situations.
• Must be willing to enter confined spaces and be fit for respirator.
• Must pass respiratory fit test.
• Reliable attendance is required (activities of other employees depend on performance).
