Plant Mechanic
Rogers Group, Inc., headquartered in Nashville, is a privately held aggregates and asphalt highway construction company operating in 13 states with over 3,500 employees. Established in 1908, RGI is the largest privately held aggregate producer in the United States.
About the role
The Plant Mechanic will work in the Staunton, VA area for our Virginia SMA quarry operations, reporting directly to the Plant Manager. The successful candidate will have a very strong mechanical skillset and be able to work with little or no supervision while performing complex maintenance and fabrication on fixed plants.
Responsibilities
- Inspect equipment for safety and mechanical deficiencies.
- Maintain equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and industry practice to minimize downtime and cost efficacy.
- Keep written records of equipment conditions and repairs through work order systems.
- Repair equipment as needed in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Maintain inventories of repair parts to minimize downtime.
- Organize storage and warehouses to maximize efficiency.
- Clean up after completing repairs in accordance with site policy.
- Maintain a safety culture in line with corporate policy.
- Remove and install guards and other equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Use tools such as impact plant wrenches up to 2” drive torque wrenches, hand and power tools, and sledge hammers for up to 12 hours.
- Read gauges and keep accurate records of operating procedures and maintenance history.
- Perform mechanical assembly and fabrication.
- Read and understand equipment manuals pertaining to operation, parts, maintenance, and assembly (schematics as needed).
- Operate maintenance trucks, forklifts, and man lifts (standard and automatic).
- Read forms, signage, and write basic reports on equipment.
- Participate in and deliver toolbox talks.
- Perform job safety risk assessments.
- Clean up the workplace after the job.
- Ensure good housekeeping in the shop and plant.
- Comply with lock-out procedures and all safety requirements.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum of four years’ maintenance experience in a mining or construction environment, preferably in the aggregates industry.
- Knowledge of pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems.
- Knowledge of all types of equipment used in the aggregates industry.
- Ability to reason through difficult operations/maintenance problems and resolve them or relate them to others.
- Knowledge of storeroom and tool room procedures.
- Knowledge of MSHA standards and requirements.
- Knowledge of hazards associated with areas of responsibility.
- Excellent work ethic and safety record.
- Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen.
Physical Requirements
- Visual acuity, speech, and hearing.
- Hand and eye coordination.
- Standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, climbing on equipment, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, pushing, pulling, reaching, twisting, balancing, and squatting for extended periods (up to 12 hours).
- Working at heights up to 350 feet.
- Repetitive motion.
- Use of proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
- Walking/standing on uneven ground, walkways, and catwalks throughout the workday.
- Manually positioning crane-lifted parts and equipment.
- Physically lifting up to 75 lbs. parts waist high for mounting into position.
- Working in tight areas to install and handle heavy parts.
Working Conditions
- Work outside in all weather conditions: heat, cold, dust, and wet for a minimum of 8 hours per day.
- Work in high noise level areas while wearing proper PPE.
- Exposure to dust, diesel exhaust, lubricants, solvents, and various fuels.
- Ability to work overtime as required by the job.
- Ability to work days or nights as required by the job.
Pay
Wages starting at $18/hour for entry-level candidates. Wages may be higher based on experience. Some positions require training, and Rogers Group will provide training.
