About the role
The Tool and Die Technician serves as a technical expert responsible for ensuring the precision, performance, and reliability of tooling and dies across production operations. This role leads troubleshooting, fabrication, and improvement efforts to maintain high standards of quality, safety, and productivity. This position provides technical guidance to peers, supports engineering initiatives, and drives continuous improvement within the toolroom and production environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain complex tooling, molds, and dies to ensure production readiness.
- Perform preventative and predictive maintenance using established PM/TPM systems.
- Fabricate new or replacement parts using CNC/manual machining, grinding, and welding.
- Interpret engineering drawings and GD&T specifications to produce high-precision tooling.
- Collaborate with Engineering and Production teams to improve tool designs and processes.
- Lead safety practices, maintain compliance with OSHA standards, and uphold 5S principles.
- Mentor technicians and apprentices, sharing expertise in troubleshooting and fabrication.
- Support root-cause analysis, cost reduction, and process improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
- A High School Diploma or GED is required; a 2-year technical degree, journeyman certification, or equivalent advanced trade qualification is strongly preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in tool and die maintenance, fabrication, and troubleshooting within a manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Proven expertise in tool design interpretation, precision machining, and advanced repair techniques is required.
- Proficiency in CNC and manual machining, precision grinding, welding, and assembly of complex dies is essential.
- A strong understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics, mechanical systems, and die protection technologies is necessary.
- Experience reading and interpreting GD&T, blueprints, and 3D models is required.
- Skilled in the use of precision instruments including micrometers, bore gauges, and indicators is necessary.
- Experience supporting lean manufacturing, TPM, and 5S principles in a production environment is preferred.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills are required.
- The ability to safely and consistently use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including respirator, safety eyewear, hearing protection, and steel-toed footwear is essential.
