Pipeline Technician

About the Role

The Pipeline Technician position is a member of the Operations Team and reports to the COLT Hub Operations Manager. The COLT Hub aggregates and stores crude oil for outbound deliveries to railcars (unit trains) or via pipelines. The COLT Connector is a bi-directional pipeline that supplies and delivers crude oil between the COLT Hub, DAPL, Enbridge and Dry Fork Terminal. Crude oil trucking and gathering systems owned and operated by third parties supply the COLT Hub with crude oil directly from the production fields.

The Pipeline Tech provides direct support to the Plant Operator in meeting daily receipt and shipping schedules. Support includes assistance given to truck drivers with terminal orientation and truck unloading procedures, making line-ups for oil movements, meter proving, general facility upkeep, inspections, and maintenance. Lab analysis responsibilities are a daily activity required for timely preparation of rail ticketing and documentation. Pipeline Techs complete month-end inventory gauging and sampling activities.

Responsibilities

• Issue Work Permits to contractors and monitor work as required to safely perform field work.
• Perform lab analysis of Crude Oil for API Gravity, Sediment & Water, H2S, RVP, and Sulfur as prescribed in ASTM Standards.
• Conduct tank gauging and sampling as per API Standards.
• Complete DOT Operator Qualifications Compliance Testing.
• Support Plant Operator with duties including manifold valve and tank valve positioning, 3rd party truck driver orientation, and equipment troubleshooting.
• Perform grounds maintenance using skid steer, tractor, snowplow, mowers, and other motorized equipment in the facility and within the Pipeline Right of Way.
• Perform routine and corrective maintenance and inspections inside terminals.
• Complete associated documentation and records on paper and electronic format to satisfy company and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain facility equipment, including supporting Mechanics as directed.
• Perform housekeeping duties for assigned truck skids, buildings, grounds, and other terminal areas.
• Complete job assignments as directed by the Plant Operator or others in keeping with Daily Shipping Schedules.
• Ensure safe and efficient operations of all ND assets, protecting employees, the public, the environment, company assets, and customers’ assets.
• Maintain compliance with training requirements by completing Energy Transfer Environmental, Safety, and Regulatory (ESR) training modules and other computer-based training.
• Monitor inventory of consumable items and reorder as needed.

Requirements

• Obtain HAZWOPER Certification.
• Obtain FEMA ICS Certification.
• Able to climb stairs for gauging and sampling of storage tanks.
• Aptitude for working in a lab environment by performing basic petroleum tests.
• Must be able to work 12-hour rotating shifts, which include nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Must be able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
• Must be able to pass a fitness test for respirator use.
• Skills required to safely operate motorized equipment in the field.
• Work flexible hours, rotating shifts, and be available to work overtime.
• Subject to 24/7 call-out; must be able to respond within 45 minutes for off-duty call-outs.

• Aptitude for basic math skills.

• Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and climb 6 flights of stairs several times daily.
• Willing and able to work outdoors in extreme winter conditions.
• Reliable attendance at work.
• Occasional overnight travel may be required.

Qualifications

Experience is commensurate with the selected job level:

• Level C: 0 – 2 years of relevant industry experience or equivalent work experience.
• Level B: 2 – 4 years of relevant industry experience or equivalent work experience.
• Level A: 4+ years of relevant industry experience or equivalent work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior industry experience in pipeline or crude storage operations.
• Experience in Crude Oil lab analysis per ASTM standards.
• Prior experience in rail loading operations.
• Crude safety credentials including OSHA 30, First Aid, and CPR.
• Incipient fire response training.
• Basic spill response training.
