Pipefitter Journeyman

About the role

Responsible for laying out, fabricating, assembling, installing, and maintaining piping and piping systems, fixtures, and equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling, and industrial processing systems.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and comply with all Company and safety policies and procedures
  • Select type and size of pipe and related materials according to job specifications
  • Inspect worksite to determine presence of obstructions and ensure holes will not cause structural weakness
  • Plan sequence of installation to avoid obstructions and activities of other construction workers
  • Cut pipe using hacksaw, pipe cutters, hammer and chisel, cutting torch, and pipe cutting machine
  • Thread pipe using threading machine
  • Bend pipe by hand or with pipe-bending machine
  • Assemble and install a variety of metal and nonmetal pipe and pipe fittings, including brass, copper, lead, glass, and plastic
  • Join pipe by means of threaded, caulked, wiped, soldered, brazed, fused, or cemented joints
  • Use hand tools to secure pipe to structure with clamps, brackets, and hangers
  • Install and maintain refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, including compressors, pumps, meters, pneumatic and hydraulic controls, and piping
  • Test piping system for leaks by increasing pressure in pipes and observing gauges attached to pipes for indication of leaks
  • Weld holding fixtures to structural steel members
  • Travel to different jobsites on limited notice as required
  • Other duties as assigned by Foreman or Superintendent

Requirements

  • 4+ years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • High school diploma or GED Certification (preferred)
  • Applicable Pipefitter training and certificate from NCCER, NCCCO, or from approved 3rd party certification body (preferred)

  • Knowledgeable of MIC Health and Safety programs and project-specific regulations
  • Actively participate in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors when on-site
  • Set a personal example of safe behavior
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Perform arithmetic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with units of weight, measurement, and volume
  • Apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form
  • Work within precise standards of accuracy and follow set procedures and standards
  • Maintain in-depth relations with all members of their team and supervisor
  • Evaluate information based on measurable standards and recognize slight differences in shapes and shadings
  • Visualize objects in three dimensions from drawings
  • Keep good balance and work at heights
  • See well (either naturally or with correction)
  • Hear well (either naturally or with correction)
  • Coordinate the use of eyes, hands, and feet

Physical Demands

  • Work up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical work in varying temperatures and outside conditions
  • Maintain physical strength and stamina; use arms, hands, and legs fully
  • Push, pull, and frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Stoop, kneel, balance, crouch, crawl, and climb to perform job tasks
  • Perform tasks repetitively and continuously for several hour intervals
  • Work in uncontrolled environmental conditions with constant changes in weather and site conditions
  • Moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises
  • Wear personal protective equipment (including but not limited to safety-toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hardhat, vest, etc.)
  • Move in and around confined, cluttered, and uneven areas
  • Work at heights and abide by all safety and fall-protection requirements; wear and utilize all safety equipment required for work at heights

Schedule

This is a full-time position scheduled to work typically 50 hours per week. Schedule is subject to project requirements. Travel required up to 90%. Position requires presence directly on the Project Site location with intermittent travel to residence of record.

Pay

$35/hour, commensurate with experience.
